SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3095Narrated Jabir Bin Abdullah: There was a Jew in Medina who used to lend me money up to the season of plucking dates. Jabir had a piece of land which was on the way to Ruma. That year the land was not promising; so the payment of the debt was delayed one year. The Jew came to me at the time of plucking; but gathered nothing from my land. I asked him to give me one year respite; but he refused. This news reached the Prophet ﷺ whereupon he said to his companions; Let us go and ask the Jew for respite for Jabir. All of them came to me in my garden; and the Prophet ﷺ started speaking to the Jew; but he Jew said; O Abu Qasim! I will not grant him respite. When the Prophet ﷺ saw the Jew attitude; he stood up and walked all around the garden and came again and talked to the Jew; but the Jew refused his request. I got up and brought some ripe fresh dates and put it in front of the Prophet. He ate and then said to me; Where is your hut; O Jabir? I informed him; and he said; Spread out a bed for me in it. I spread out a bed; and he entered and slept. When he woke up; I brought some dates to him again and he ate of it and then got up and talked to the Jew again; but the Jew again refused his request. Then the Prophet ﷺ got up for the second time amidst the palm trees loaded with fresh dates; and said; O Jabir! Pluck dates to repay your debt. The Jew remained with me while I was plucking the dates; till I paid him all his right; yet there remained extra quantity of dates. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3217Narrated Anas Bin Malik: Abu Talha had a child who was sick. Once; while Abu Talha was out; the child died. When Abu Talha returned home; he asked; How does my son fare? Um Salaim his wife replied; He is quieter than he has ever been. Then she brought supper for him and he took his supper and slept with her. When he had finished; she said to him ; Bury the child as he dead. Next morning Abu Talha came to Allah Messenger ﷺ and told him about that. The Prophet ﷺ said to him ; Did you sleep with your wife last night? Abu Talha said; Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said; O Allah! Bestow your blessing on them as regards that night of theirs. Um Sulaim gave birth to a boy. Abu Talha told me to take care of the child till it was taken to the Prophet. Then Abu Talha took the child to the Prophet ﷺ and Um Sulaim sent some dates along with the child. The Prophet ﷺ took the child on his lap and asked if there was something with him. The people replied; Yes; a few dates. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3611Narrated Asma bint Abu Bakr: When AlZubair married me; he had no real property or any slave or anything else except a camel which drew water from the well; and his horse. I used to feed his horse with fodder and drew water and sew the bucket for drawing it; and prepare the dough; but I did not know how to bake bread. So our Ansari neighbors used to bake bread for me; and they were honorable ladies. I used to carry the date stones on my head from AlZubair land given to him by Allah Messenger ﷺ and this land was two third Farsakh about two miles from my house. One day; while I was coming with the date stones on my head; I met Allah Messenger ﷺ along with some Ansari people. He called me and then; directing his camel to kneel down said; Ikh! Ikh! so as to make me ride behind him on his camel. I felt shy to travel with the men and remembered AlZubair and his sense of Ghira; as he was one of those people who had the greatest sense of Ghira. Allah Messenger ﷺ noticed that I felt shy; so he proceeded. I came to AlZubair and said; I met Allah Messenger ﷺ while I was carrying a load of date stones on my head; and he had some companions with him. He made his camel kneel down so that I might ride; but I felt shy in his presence and remembered your sense of Ghira See the glossary. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3774Narrated Anas Bin Malik: Allah Messenger ﷺ arrived at Medina with Abu Bakr; riding behind him on the same camel. Abu Bakr was an elderly man known to the people; while Allah Messenger ﷺ was a youth that was unknown. Thus; if a man met Abu Bakr; he would say; O Abu Bakr! Who is this man in front of you? Abu Bakr would say; This man shows me the Way; One would think that Abu Bakr meant the road; while in fact; Abu Bakr meant the way of virtue and good. Then Abu Bakr looked behind and saw a horse-rider pursuing them. He said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! This is a horse-rider pursuing us. The Prophet ﷺ looked behind and said; O Allah! Cause him to fall down. So the horse threw him down and got up neighing. After that the rider; Suraqa said; O Allah Prophet! Order me whatever you want. The Prophet said; Stay where you are and do not allow anybody to reach us. So; in the first part of the day Suraqa was an enemy of Allah Prophet and in the last part of it; he was a protector. Then Allah Apostle alighted by the side of the AlHarra and sent a message to the Ansar; and they came to Allah Prophet and Abu Bakr; and having greeted them; they said; Ride your camels safe and obeyed. Allah Messenger ﷺ and Abu Bakr rode and the Ansar; carrying their arms; surrounded them. The news that Allah Prophet had come circulated in Medina. The people came out and were eagerly looking and saying Allah Prophet has come! Allah Prophet has come! So the Prophet ﷺ went on till he alighted near the house of Abu Ayoub. While the Prophet ﷺ was speaking with the family members of Abu Ayoub ; Abdullah Bin Salam heard the news of his arrival while he himself was picking the dates for his family from his family garden. He hurried to the Prophet ﷺ carrying the dates which he had collected for his family from the garden. He listened to Allah Prophet and then went home. Then Allah Prophet said; Which is the nearest of the houses of our kith and kin? Abu Ayoub replied; Mine; O Allah Prophet! This is my house and this is my gate. The Prophet ﷺ said; Go and prepare a place for our midday rest. Abu Ayoub said; Get up both of you with Allah Blessings. So when Allah Prophet went into the house; Abdullah Bin Salam came and said I testify that you i.e. Muhammad are Apostle of Allah and that you have come with the Truth. The Jews know well that I am their chief and the son of their chief and the most learned amongst them and the son of the most learned amongst them. So send for them i.e. Jews and ask them about me before they know that I have embraced Islam; for if they know that they will say about me things which are not correct. So Allah Messenger ﷺ sent for them; and they came and entered. Allah Messenger ﷺ said to them; O the group of Jews! Woe to you: be afraid of Allah. By Allah except Whom none has the right to be worshipped; you people know for certain; that I am Apostle of Allah and that I have come to you with the Truth; so embrace Islam. The Jews replied; We do not know this. So they said this to the Prophet and he repeated it thrice. Then he said; What sort of a man is Abdullah Bin Salam amongst you? They said; He is our chief and the son of our chief and the most learned man; and the son of the most learned amongst us. He said; What would you think if he should embrace Islam? They said; Allah forbid! He can not embrace Islam. He said; What would you think if he should embrace Islam? They said; Allah forbid! He can not embrace Islam. He said; What would you think if he should embrace Islam? They said; Allah forbid! He can not embrace Islam. He said; O Ibn Salam! Come out to them. He came out and said; O the group of Jews! Be afraid of Allah except Whom none has the right to be worshipped. You know for certain that he is Apostle of Allah and that he has brought a True Religion! They said; You tell a lie. SahihMuslim-017-001-17449Jabir reported: Allah Messenger may peace he upon him sent us on an expedition and appointed Abu Ubaida our chief that we might intercept a caravan of the Quraish and provided us with a bag of dates. And he found for us nothing besides it. Abu Ubaida gave each of us one date everyday. I Abu Zubair; one of the narrators said: What did you do with that? He said: We sucked that just as a baby sucks and then drank water over that; and it sufficed us for the day until night. We beat off leaves with the help of our staffs; then drenched them with water and ate them. We then went to the coast of the sea; and there rose before us on the coast of the sea something like a big mound. We came near that and we found that it was a beast; called AlAnbar spermaceti whale. Abu Ubaida said. It is dead. He then said: No but it does not matter ; we have been sent by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the path of Allah and you are hard pressed on account of the scarcity of food ; so you eat that. We three hundred in number stayed there for a month; until we grew bulky. He Jabir said: I saw how we extracted pitcher after pitcher full of fat from the cavity of its eye; and sliced from it compact piece of meat equal to a bull or like a bull. Abu Ubaida called forth thirteen men from us and he made them sit in the cavity of its eye; and he took hold of one of the ribs of its chest and made it stand and then saddled the biggest of the camels we had with us and it passed under it the arched rib ; and we provided ourselves with pieces of boiled meat especially for use in our journey. When we came back to Medina; we went to Allah Messenger ﷺ and made a mention of that to him; whereupon he said: That was a provision which Allah had brought forth for you. Is there any piece of meat left with you; so tnat you give to us that? SahihMuslim-017-001-17450Jabir Bin Abdullah reported: Allah Messenger may peace he upon him sent us on an expedition. We were three hundred riders and our chief leader was Ubaida Bin AlJarrah. We were on the look out for a caravan of the Quraish. So we stayed on the coast for half a month; and were so much afflicted by extreme hunger that we were obliged to eat leaves. That is why it was called the Detachment of the Leaves. The ocean cast out for us an animal which was called AlAnbar whale. We ate of that for half of the month and rubbed its fat on our bodies until our bodies became stout. Abu Ubaida caught hold of one of its ribs and fixed that up. He then cast a glance at the tallest man of the army and the highest of the camels. and then made him ride over that; and that-tnan passed beneath it the rib ; and many a man could sit in its eye-socket; and we extracted many pitchers of fat from the cavity of its eye. We had small bags containing dates with us before finding the whale. Ubaida gave every person amongst us a handful of dates and when the provision ran short ; he then gave each one of us one date. SahihMuslim-017-001-17895It has been reported on the authority of Anas Bin Malik who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Busaisah as a scout to see what the caravan of Abu Sufyan was doing. He came back and met the Prophet in his house where there was nobody except myself and the Messenger of Allah. I do not remember whether he Hadrat Anas made an exception of some wives of the Prophet ﷺ or not and told him the news of the caravan. Having heard the news ; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out hurriedly ; spoke to the people and said: We are in need of men ; whoever has an animal to ride upon ready with him should ride with us. People began to ask him permission for bringing their riding animals which were grazing on the hillocks near Medina. He said: No. I want only those who have their riding animals ready. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions proceeded towards Badr and reached there forestalling the polytheists of Mecca. When the polytheists also reached there; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: None of you should step forward to do anything unless I am ahead of him. The polytheists now advanced towards us ; and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. Get up to enter Paradise which is equal in width to the heavens and the earth. Umair Bin AlHumam AlAnsari said: Messenger of Allah; is Paradise equal in extent to the heavens and the earth? He said: Yes. Umair said: My goodness! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him: What prompted you to utter these words i. e. my goodness! ? He said: Messenger of Allah; nothing but the desire that I be among its residents. He said: Thou art surely amona its residents. He took out dates from his bag and began to eat them. Then he said: If I were to live until I have eaten all these dates of mine; it would be a long life. The narrator said : He threw away all the dates he had with him. SahihMuslim-017-001-18304Abi Qilabah reported: I was in Syria having a circle of friends. in which was Muslim Bin Yasir. There came Ab AlAshath. He the narrator said that they the friends called him: Ab AlAshath; Ab AlAshath; and he sat down. I said to him: Narrate to our brother the hadith of Ubada Bin Samit. He said: Yes. We went out on an expedition; Muawiya being the leader of the people; and we gained a lot of spoils of war. And there was one silver utensil in what we took as spoils. Muawiya ordered a person to sell it for payment to the people soldiers. The people made haste in getting that. The news of this state of affairs reached Ubada Bin Samit; and he stood up and said: I heard Allah Messenger ﷺ forbidding the sale of gold by gold; and silver by silver; and wheat by wheat; and barley by barley; and dates by dates; and salt by salt; except like for like and equal for equal. So he who made an addition or who accepted an addition committed the sin of taking interest. So the people returned what they had got. This reached Muawiya. and he stood up to deliver an address. He said: What is the matter with people that they narrate from the Messenger ﷺ such tradition which we did not hear though we saw him the Holy Prophet and lived in his company? Thereupon; Ubida Bin Samit stood up and repeated that narration; and then said: We will definitely narrate what we heard from Allah Messenger ﷺ though it may be unpleasant to Muawiya or he said: Even if it is against his will. I do not mind if I do not remain in his troop in the dark night. SahihMuslim-017-001-18329Abu Nadra reported: I asked Ibn Abbas Allah be pleased with them about the conversion of gold and silver for silver and gold. We said: Is it hand to hand exchange? I said: Yes. whereupon he said: There is no harm in it. I informed Abu Saeed about it; telling him that I had asked Ibn Abbas about it and he said: Is it hand to hand exchange? I said: Yes; whereupon he said: There is no harm in it. He the narrator said; or he said like it: We will soon write to him; and he will not give you this fatwa religious verdict. So I got these dates in exchange by giving excess of the dates of our land ; whereupon he said: You made an addition for getting the fine dates in exchange which tantamounts; to interest; dont do that in future. SahihMuslim-017-001-18330Abu Nadra reported: I asked Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas Allah be pleased with them about the conversion of gold with gold but they did not find any harm in that. I was sitting in the company of Abd Saeed AlKhudri Allah be pleased with him and asked him about this exchange; and he said: Whatever is addition is an interest. I refused to accept it on account of their statement statement of Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar. He said: I am not narrating to you except what I heard from Allah Messenger ﷺ. There came to him the owner of a date-palm with one sa of fine dates; and the dates of Allah Apostle ﷺ were of that colour. Allah Apostle ﷺ said to him: Where did you get these dates? I went with two sa of inferior dates and bought one sa of these fine dates ; for that is the prevailing price of inferior dates in the market and that is the price of the fine quality of dates in the market ; whereupon Allah Messenger ﷺ said: Woe be upon you! You have dealt in interest; when you decide to do it i. e. exchange superior quality of dates for inferior quality ; so you should sell your dates for another commodity or currency and then with the help of that commodity buy the dates you like. Abu Saad said: When dates are exchanged for dates with different qualities there is the possibility of the element of interest creeping into that or when gold is exchanged for gold having different qualities. I subsequently came to Ibn Umar and he forbade me to do it ; but I did not come to Ibn Abbas; Allah be pleased with them. SahihMuslim-017-001-18408It is reported on the authority of Qatada that one among the delegates of the Abd AlQais tribe narrated this tradition to him. Saeed said that Qatada had mentioned the name of Abu Nadra on the authority of Abu Saeed Khudri who narrated this tradition: That people from the- tribe of Abd AlQais came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah; we belong to the tribe of Rabia and there live between you and us the unbelievers of the Mudar tribe and we find it impossible to come to you except in the sacred months; direct us to a deed which we must communicate to those who have been left behind us and by doing which we may enter heaven. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I enjoin upon you four things and forbid you to do four things : worship Allah and associate none with Him; establish prayer; pay Zakat; and observe the fast of Ramadan; and pay the fifth part out of the booty. And I prohibit you from four things : dry gourds; green-coloured jars; hollowed stumps of palm-trees; and receptacles. They the members of the delegation said: Do you know what Alnaqir is? He replied: Yes; it is a stump which you hollow out and in which you throw small dates. Saeed said: He the Holy Prophet used the word tamar dates. The Prophet then added : Then you sprinkle water over it and when its ebullition subsides; you drink it and you are so intoxicated that one amongst you; or one amongst them the other members of your tribe; who were not present there strikes his cousin with the sword. He the narrator said: There was a man amongst us who had sustained injury on this very account due to intoxication ; and he told that he tried to conceal it out of shame from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I; however; inquired from the Messenger of Allah it we discard those utensils which you have forbidden us to use ; then what type of vessels should be used for drink? He the Holy Prophet replied: In the waterskin the mouths of which are tied with a string. They again said: Prophet of Allah; our land abounds in rats and water-skins cannot remain preserved. The holy Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: Drink in water-skins even if these arenibbled by rats. He the narrator said: Upon this Umar said: Messenger of Allah; I wish that you should pool together what has been left out of the provisions with the people and then invoke the blessings of Allah upon it. He the narrator said: He the Holy Prophet did it accordingly. He the narrator said: The one who had wheat in his possession came there with wheat. He who had dates with him came there with dates. And Mujahid said: He who possessed stones of dates came there with stones. I the narrator said: What did they do with the date-stones. They said: They the people sucked them and then drank water over them. He the narrator said : He the Holy Prophet invoked the blessings of Allah upon them provisions. He the narrator said: And there was such a miraculous increase in the stocks that the people replenished their provisions fully. He the narrator said: At that time he the Holy Prophet said: I bear testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah; and I am His messenger. SunanAlTermithi-017-001-9610Abu Huraira narrated : The Prophet ﷺ went out during an hour in which he would normally not go out; nor meet with anyone. Then Abu Bakr came to him. So he said:What brought you O Abu Bakr? He said: I came to meet the Messenger of Allah s.a.w and to look at his face; and to make sure he was safe. It was not long before Umar came. He said: What has brought you O Umar ? He said: Hunger O Messenger of Allah!He said: I also experienced some of that So they went to the home of Abu AlHaitham AlTaiyihan AlAnsari. He was a man with many date-palms and sheep; but he had no servants so they did not find him there. They said to his wife: Where is your companion? She said: He has gone to fetch us some good water. It was not long before Abu AlHaitham came along hauling to a large water-skin which he put down. Then he came to hug the Prophet ﷺ and uttered that his father and mother should be ransomed for him. Then he went to grove of his and he spread out a mat for them. Then he went to a date-palm and returned with a cluster of dates which he put down. The prophet s.a.w said: Why dont you select some ripe dates for us? He said: O Messenger of Allah s.a.w ! I wanted you to select from the ripe dates and the unripe dates. So they ate and they drank from that water. The Messenger of Allah s.a.w said: By the One in Whose Hand is my soul! This is among the favors which you shall be asked about on the Day Of Judgment. Cool shade; tasty ripe dates; and cool water. Abu AlHaitham left to prepare some food for them. The Prophet ﷺ said: Do not slaughter one with milk. So he Slaughtered a small female or male goat and brought it to them so they could eat it. The Prophet ﷺ said: Do you have any servants? He said: No. So he said: Then if we get some captives we shall bring them for you. So later the Prophet ﷺ came with 2 males; there was no third among them and he brought them to Abu AlHaitham. The Prophet ﷺ said: Choose from them. He said: O Prophet of Allah! Choose for me. So the Prophet ﷺ said: Indeed the one consulted is entrusted. Take this one for I have seen him praying; and encourage him to do well. So Abu AlHaitham went to his wife and informed her of what the Messenger of Allah s.a.w said. So his wife said: You will not fulfill what the Prophet ﷺ said until you have freed him. So he said: He is free. So the Prophet ﷺ said: Indeed Allah has not send a Prophet nor made a Khalifah except that he has two groups of supporters; group ordering him to do good; and prohibiting him from evil and a group that never ceases spoiling his affairs. Then for every bucket I pulled out; he would give me a date; until when it was enough for me. I put his bucket down and said: I think I had enough to eat then I scooped some water to drink it. He said: He stood with me; and a woman and a boy met him and said: We have a need from you. He stood with them; until he was finished dealing with what they wanted. He expressed thanks and praise for Allah then said: What has caused you to flee from saying La Ilaha Illallah? Do you know of another god other than Him? He said: I said: No. He said: Then he talked for some time; and then said: You refuse to say Allahu Akbar because you know that there is something greater than Allah? He said: I said: No. He said: Indeed the Jews are those who Allah is wrath with; and the Christians have strayed. He said: I said: Indeed I am a Muslim; Hanif. He said: I saw his face smiling with happiness. He said: Then he ordered that I stop with him at the home of a man from the Ansar; whom he would frequently visit in the mornings and the evenings. When I was with him at night; a people in woolen garments of these Nimar a cloth with certain patters; and the word appeared before came. Then he performed Prayer and stood to encourage them the people to give charity to them. Then he said: Even with a Sa or half a Sa; or a handful or part of a handful; to save the face of one of you from the heat of Hell; or the Fire. And even if it be by a date or a part of a date - for indeed one of you shall meet Allah and it shall be said to him what I say to you: Have I not given hearing and seeing to you? He shall say: Of course. It will be said: Have I not given you wealth and children? He shall say: Of course. It will be said: So where is what you have sent forth for yourself? He will look before him and behind him; on his right and on his left; but he shall not find anything to protect his face from the heat of Hell. Let one of you protect his face from the Fire; even if with part of a date; and if he does not find that; then with a good statement. SunanAlTermithi-017-001-9864Narrated Abu Malik: from AlBara regarding : And do not aim at that which is bad to spend from it 2:267 - he said: It was revealed about us; the people of the Ansar who were date-palm owners. A man would bring the amount of dates that he would from his date-palms; either a lot or a little. A man would bring a cluster or two and hang it in the Masjid. The people of AlSuffah did not have food; so one of them would go up to the cluster and hit it with his stick; and unripe and ripe dates would fall; and he would eat. Some people did not hope for good; so a man would bring a cluster with pitless and hard dates; and a cluster with damaged dates; and hang it. SunanAlTermithi-017-001-9992Narrated Mousa Bin Talha h: that Abu AlYasar said: A woman came to me selling dates. I said to her: There are better dates than these in the house. So she entered the house with me. I had an urge for her so I began kissing her. I went to Abu Bakr and mentioned that to him; so he said: Cover what you have done; repent; do not inform any one; and never do it again. So I went to Umar and mentioned that to him. He said: Cover what you have done; repent; do not inform any one; and never do it again. Then I went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned it to him. He said: Is this how you take care of the wife of someone who is away fighting in Allah cause? Such that he had wished he had not accepted Islam until that very time; and he thought that he must be one of the people of the Fire. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ bowed his head for a long time; until Allah revealed to him: And perform the Prayer; at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. When the month of Ramadan came; I feared lest I should have intercourse with my wife; and this evil should remain with me till the morning. So I made my wife like my mother back to me till the end of Ramadan. But one night when she was waiting upon me; something of her was revealed. Suddenly I jumped upon her. When the morning came I went to my people and informed them about this matter. I said: Go along with me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said: No; by Allah. So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of the matter. He said: Have you really committed it; Salamah? I said: I committed it twice; Messenger of Allah. I am content with the Commandment of Allah; the Exalted; so take a decision about me according to what Allah has shown you. He said: Free a slave. I said: By Him Who sent you with truth; I do not possess a neck other than this: and I struck the surface of my neck. He said: Then fast two consecutive months. I said: Whatever I suffered is due to fasting. He said: Feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates. I said: By Him Who sent you with truth; we passed the night hungry; there was no food in our house. He said: Then go to the collector of sadaqah of Banu Zurayq; he must give it to you. Then feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates; and you and your family eat the remaining dates. Then I came back to my people; and said to them : I found with you poverty and bad opinion; and I found with the Prophet ﷺ prosperity and good opinion. He has commanded me to give alms to you. He used to give us a little provision from it each day until it was finished; and we used to have only a single date each. I said; What use is one date? MuwataMalik-017-001-35057Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Said Ibn AlMusayab that the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; forbade muzabana and muhaqala. Muzabana was selling fresh dates for dried dates. Muhaqala was buying unharvested wheat in exchange for threshed wheat and renting land in exchange for wheat. Ibn Shihab added that he had asked Said Ibn AlMusayab about renting land for gold and silver. He said; There is no harm in it. Malik said; The Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; forbade muzabana. The explanation of muzabana is that it is buying something whose number; weight and measure is not known with something whose number; weight or measure is known; for instance; if a man has a stack of food whose measure is not known; either of wheat; dates; or whatever food; or the man has goods of wheat; date kernels; herbs; safflower; cotton; flax; silk; and does not know its measure or weight or number and then a buyer approaches him and proposes that he weigh or measure or count the goods; but; before he does; he specifies a certain weight; or measure; or number and guarantees to pay the price for that amount; agreeing that whatever falls short of that amount is a loss against him and whatever is in excess of that amount is a gain for him. That is not a sale. It is taking risks and it is an uncertain transaction. It falls into the category of gambling because he is not buying something from him for something definite which he pays. Everything which resembles this is also forbidden. Malik said that another example of that was; for instance; a man proposing to another man; You have cloth. I will guarantee you from this cloth of yours so many hooded cloaks; the measureof each cloak to be such-and-such; naming a measurement. Whatever loss there is; is against me and I will fulfill you the specified amount and whatever excess there is; is mine. Or perhaps the man proposed; I will guarantee you from this cloth of yours so many shirts; the measurement of each shirt to be such-and-such; and whatever loss there is; is against me and I will fulfill the specified amount and whatever excess there is; is mine. Or perhaps a man proposed to a man who had cattle or camel hides; I will cut up these hides of yours into sandals on a pattern I will show you. Whatever falls short of a hundred pairs; I will make up its loss and whatever is over is mine because I guaranteed you. Another example was that a man say to a man who had ben-nuts; I will press these nuts of yours. Whatever falls short of such-and-such a weight by the pound; I will make it up; and whatever is more than that is mine. Malik said that all this and whatever else was like it or resembled it was in the category of muzabana; which was neither good nor permitted. It was also the same case for a man to say to a man; who had fodder leaves; date kernels; cotton; flax; herbs or safflower; I will buy these leaves from you in exchange for such-and-such a sa; indicating leaves which are pounded like his leaves.. or these date kernels for such-and-such a sa of kernels like them; and the like of that in the case of safflower; cotton; flax and herbs. MuwataMalik-017-001-35058Malik said; There is no harm in buying dates from specified trees or a specified orchard or buying milk from specified sheep when the buyer starts to take them as soon as he has payed the price. That is like buying oil from a container. A man buys some of it for a dinar or two and gives his gold and stipulates that it be measured out for him. There is no harm in that. If the container breaks and the oil is wasted; the buyer has his gold back and there is no transaction between them. Malik said; There is no harm in everything which is taken right away as it is; like fresh milk and fresh picked dates which the buyer can take on a day-to-day basis. If the supply runs out before the buyer has what he has paid for in full; the seller gives him back the portion of the gold that is owed to him; or else the buyer takes other goods from him to the value of what he is owed and which they mutually agree about. The buyer should stay with the seller until he has taken it. It is disapproved of for the seller to leave because the transaction would then come into the forbidden category of a debt for a debt. If a stated time period for payment or delivery enters into the transaction; it is also disapproved. Delay and deferment are not permitted in it; and are only acceptable when it is standard practice on definite terms by which the seller guarantees it to the buyer; but this is not to be from one specific orchard or from any specific ewes. Malik was asked about a man who bought an orchard from another man in which there were various types of palm-trees - excellent ajwa palms; good kabis palms; adhq palms and othertypes. The seller kept Aasi de from the sale the produce of a certain palm of his choice. Malik said; That is not good because if he does that; and keeps Aasi de; for instance; dates of the ajwa variety whose yield would be 15 sa; and he picks the dates of the kabis in their place; and the yield of their dates is 10 sa or he picks the ajwa which yield 15 sa and leaves the kabis which yield 10 sa; it is as if he bought the ajwa for the kabis making allowances for their difference of quality. This is the same as if a man dealing with a man who has heaps of dates before him - a heap of 15 sa of ajwa; a heap of 10 sa of kabis; and a heap of 12 sa of cadhq; gives the owner of the dates a dinar to let him choose and take whichever of the heaps he likes. Malik said; That is not good. Malik was asked what a man who bought fresh dates from the owner of an orchard and advanced him a dinar was entitled to if the crop was spoilt. Malik said; The buyer makes a reckoning with the owner of the orchard and takes what is due to him of the dinar. If the buyer has taken two-thirds of a dinar worth of dates; he gets back the third of a dinar which is owed him. If the buyer has taken three-quarters of a dinar worth of dates; then he gets back the quarter which is owed to him; or they come to a mutual agreement; and the buyer takes what is owed him from his dinar from the owner of the orchard in something else of his choosing. If; for instance; he prefers to take dry dates or some other goods; he takes them according to what is due. If he takes dry dates or some other goods; he should stay with him until he has been paid in full. Malik said; This is the same situation as hiring out a specified riding-camel or hiring out a slave tailor; carpenter or some other kind of worker or letting a house and taking payment in advance for the hire of the slave or the rent of the house or camel. Then an accident happens to what has been hired resulting in death or something else. The owner of the camel; slave or house returns what remains of the rent of the camel; the hire of the slave or the rent of the house to the one who advanced him the money; and the owner reckons what will settle that up in full. If; for instance; he has provided half of what the man paid for; he returns the remaining half of what he advanced; or according to whatever amount is due. Malik said; Paying in advance for something which is on hand is only good when the buyer takes possession of what he has paid for as soon as he hands over the gold; whether it be slave; camel; or house; or in the case of dates; he starts to pick them as soon as he has paid the money. It is not good that there be any deferment or credit in such a transaction. Malik said; An example illustrating what is disapproved of in this situation is that; for instance; a man may say that he will pay someone in advance for the use of his camel to ride in the hajj; and the hajj is still some time off; or he may say something similar to that about a slave or a house. When he does that; he only pays the money in advance on the understanding that if he finds the camel to be sound at the time the hire is due to begin; he will take it by virtue of what he has already paid. If an accident; or death; or something happens to the camel; then he will get his money back and the money he paid in advance will be considered as a loan. Malik said; This is distinct from someone who takes immediate possession of what he rents or hires; so that it does not fall into the category of uncertainty; or disapproved payment in advance. That is following a common practice. An example of that is that a man buys a slave; or slave-girl; and takes possession of them and pays their price. If something happens to them within the period of the year indemnification contract; he takes his gold back from the one from whom he bought it. There is no harm in that. This is the precedent of the sunna in the matter of selling slaves. He said; Talha Ibn Ubaydullah called me over and we made a mutual agreement that he would make an exchange for me. He took the gold and turned it about in his hand; and then said; I cant do it until my treasurer brings the money to me from AlGhaba. Umar Ibn AlKhattab was listening and Umar said; By Allah! Do not leave him until you have taken it from him! Then he said; The Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; said; Gold for silver is usury except hand to hand. Wheat for wheat is usury except hand to hand. Dates for dates is usury except hand to hand. Barley for barley is usury except hand to hand. Malik said; When a man buys dirhams with dinars and then finds a bad dirham among them and wants to return it; the exchange of the dinars breaks down; and he returns the silver and takes back his dinars. The explanation of what is disapproved of in that is that the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; said; Gold for silver is usury except hand to hand. and Umar Ibn AlKhattab said; If someone asks you to wait to be paid until he has gone back to his house; do not leave him. When he returns a dirham to him from the exchange after he has left him; it is like a debt or something deferred. For that reason; it is disapproved of; and the exchange collapses. Umar Ibn AlKhattab wanted that all gold; silver and food should not be sold for goods to be paid later. MuwataMalik-017-001-35072Yahya related to me from Malik that Yazid Ibn Abdullah Ibn Qusayt saw Said Ibn AlMusayab sell gold counterpoising for gold. He poured his gold into one pan of the scales; and the man with whom he was counterpoising put his gold in the other pan of the scale and when the tongue of the scales was balanced; they took and gave. Malik said; According to the way things are done among us there is no harm in selling gold for gold; and silver for silver by counterpoising weight; even if 11 dinars are taken for 10 dinars hand to hand; when the weight of gold is equal; coin for coin; even if the number is different. Dirhams in such a situation are treated the same way as dinars. Malik said; If; when counterpoising gold for gold or silver for silver; there is a difference of weight; one party should not give the other the value of the difference in silver or something else. Such a transaction is ugly and a means to usury because if one of the parties were permitted to take the difference for a separate price; it could be as if he had bought it separately; so he would be permitted. Then it would be possible for him to ask for many times the value of the difference in order to permit the completion of the transaction between the two parties. Malik said; If he had really been sold the difference without anything else with it; he would not have taken it for a tenth of the price for which he took it in order to put a legal front on the transaction. This leads to allowing what is forbidden. The matter is forbidden. Malik said that it was not good when counterpoising to give good old gold coins and put along with them unminted gold in exchange for worn kufic gold; which was unpopular and to then treat the exchange as like for like. Malik said; The commentary on why that is disapproved is that the owner of the good gold uses the excellence of his old gold coins as an excuse to throw in the unminted gold with it. Had it not been for the superiority of his good gold over the gold of the other party; the other party would not have counterpoised the unminted gold for his kufic gold; and the deal would have been refused. It is like a man wanting to buy three sa of ajwa dried dates for two sa and a mudd of kabis dates; and on being told that it was not good; then offering two sa of kabis and a sa of poor dates desiring to make the sale possible. That is not good because the owner of the ajwa should not give him a sa of ajwa for a sa of poor dates. He would only give him that because of the excellence of kabis dates. Or it is like a man asking some one to sell him three sa of white wheat for two and a half sa of Syrian wheat; and being told that it was not good except like for like; and so offering two sa of wheat and one sa of barley intending to make the sale possible between them. That is not good because no one would have given a sa of barley for a sa of white wheat had that sa been by itself. It was only given because of the excellence of Syrian wheat over the white wheat. This is not good. It is the same as the case of the unminted gold. Malik said; Where gold; silver and food; things which should only be sold like for like; are concerned; something disliked and of poor quality should not be put with something good and desirable in order to make the sale possible and to make a bad situation halal. When something of desirable quality is put with something of poor quality and it is only included so that its excellence in quality is noticed; something is being sold which if it had been sold on its own; would not have been accepted and to which the buyer would not have paid any attention. It is only accepted by the buyer because of the superiority of what comes with it over his own goods. Transactions involving gold; silver; or food; must not have anything of this description enter into them. If the owner of the poor quality goods wants to sell them; he sells them on their own; and does not put anything with them. He disapproved of that and forbade it. Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab the like of that. Malik said; Said Ibn AlMusayab; Sulayman Ibn Yasar; Abu Bakr Ibn Muhammad Ibn Amr Ibn Hazm; and Ibn Shihab forbade that a man sell wheat for gold and then buy dates with that gold before he had received the gold from the transaction in which he sold the wheat. There is no harm for someone to buy dates on delayed terms; on the strength of the gold for which he sold the wheat; from someone other than the person to whom he sold the wheat before taking possession of the gold; and to refer the one from whom he bought the dates to his debtor who bought the wheat; for the gold he is owed for the dates. MuwataMalik-017-001-35082Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah Ibn Umar said that there was no harm in a man making an advance to another man for food; with a set description and price until a set date; as long as it was not in crops; or dates which had not begun to ripen. Malik said; The way of doing things among us concerning someone who makes an advance for foodstuffs at a known rate until a stated date; and the date arrives and he finds that there is not enough of what he was sold with the seller to fulfill his order; and so he revokes the sale; is that he must only take back the silver; gold; or price which he paid exactly. He does not buy anything else from the man for the same price until he has got back what he paid. That is because if he took something else besides the price which he paid him or exchanged it for goods other than the goods which he bought from him; it would be selling food before getting delivery of it. Malik said; The Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; forbade selling food before getting delivery of it. Malik said that it was not good if the buyer regretted his purchase and asked the seller to revoke the sale for him and he would not press him immediately for what he had paid. The people of knowledge forbade that. That was because when the food was made ready for the buyer by the seller; the buyer deferred his due from the seller in order that he might revoke the sale for him. That was the sale of food with delayed terms before taking delivery of the food. Malik said; The explanation of that is that when the date of delivery comes and the buyer dislikes the food; the seller takes by it money to be paid later and so it is not revocation. Revocation is that in which neither the buyer nor the seller is increased. When increase occurs by deferment of payment for a time period; or by anything which increases one of them over the other or anything which gives one of them profit; it is not revocation. When either of them do that; revocation becomes a sale. There is an indulgence for revocation; partnership; and transfer; as long as i ncrease; decrease; or deferment does not come into them. If increase; decrease; or deferment comes into it; it becomes a sale. Whatever makes a sale halal makes it halal and whatever makes a sale haram makes it haram. Malik said; If someone pays in advance for Syrian wheat; there is no harm if he takes a load after the term falls due. Malik said; It is the same with whoever advances for any kind of thing. There is no harm in him taking better than whatever he has made an advance for or worse than it after the agreed delivery date. The explanation of that is that if; for instance; a man advances for a certain weight of wheat. There is no harm if he decides to take some barley or Syrian wheat. If he has made an advance for good dates; there is no harm if he decides to take poor quality dates. MuwataMalik-017-001-35085Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard the same as that from AlQasim Ibn Muhammad from Ibn Muayqib AlDawsi. Malik said; This is the way of doing things among us. Malik said; The generally agreed on way of doing things among us is that wheat is not sold for wheat; dates for dates; wheat for dates; dates for raisins; wheat for raisins; nor any kind of food sold for food at all; except from hand to hand. If there is any sort of delayed terms in the transaction; it is not good. It is haram. Condiments are not bartered except from hand to hand. Malik said; Food and condiments are not bartered when they are the same type; two of one kind for one of the other. A mudd of wheat is not sold for two mudds of wheat; nor a mudd of dates for two mudds of dates; nor a mudd of raisins for two mudds of raisins; nor is anything of that sort done with grains and condiments when they are of one kind; even if it is hand to hand. This is the same position as silver for silver and gold for gold. No increase is halal in the transaction; and only like for like; from hand to hand is halal. Malik said; If there is a clear difference in foodstuffs which are measured and weighed; there is no harm in taking two of one kind for one of another; hand to hand. There is no harm in taking a sa of dates for two sa of wheat; and a sa of dates for two sa of raisins; and a sa of wheat for two sa of ghee. If the two sorts in the transaction are different; there is no harm in two for one or more than that from hand to hand. If delayed terms enter into the sale; it is not halal. Malik said; It is not halal to trade a heap of wheat for a heap of wheat. There is no harm in a heap of wheat for a heap of dates; from hand to hand. That is because there is no harm in buying wheat with dates without precise measurement. Malik said; With kinds of foods and condiments that differ from each other; and the difference is clear; there is no harm in bartering one kind for another; without precise measurement from hand to hand. If delayed terms enter into the sale; there is no good in it. Bartering such things without precise measurement is like buying it with gold and silver without measuring precisely. Malik said; That is because you buy wheat with silver without measuring precisely; and dates with gold without measuring precisely; and it is halal. There is no harm in it. Malik said; It is not good for someone to make a heap of food; knowing its measure and then to sell it as if it had not been measured precisely; concealing its measure from the buyer. If the buyer wants to return that food to the seller; he can; because he concealed its measure and so it is an uncertain transaction. This is done with any kind of food or other goods whose measure and number the seller knows; and which he then sells without measurement and the buyer does not know that. If the buyer wants to return that to the seller; he can return t. The people of knowledge still forbid such a transaction. Malik said; There is no good in selling one round loaf of bread for two round loaves; nor large for small when some of them are bigger than others. When care is taken that they are like for like; there is no harm in the sale; even if they are not weighed. Malik said; It is not good to sell a mudd of butter and a mudd of milk for two mudds of butter. This is like what we described of selling dates when two sa of kabis and a sa of poor quality dates were sold for three sa of ajwa dates after the buyer had said to the seller; Two sa of kabis dates for three sa of ajwa dates is not good; and then he did that to make the transaction possible. The owner of the milk puts the milk with his butter so that he can use the superiority of his butter over the butter of the other party to put his milk in with it. Malik said; Flour for wheat is like for like; and there is no harm in that. That is if he does not mix up anything with the flour and sell it for wheat; like for like. Had he put half a mudd of flour and half of wheat; and then sold that for a mudd of wheat; it would be like what we described; and it would not be good because he would want to use the superiority of his good wheat to put flour along with it. MuwataMalik-017-001-35087Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Muhammad Seereen used to say; Do not sell grain on the ears until it is white. Malik said; If someone buys food for a known price to be delivered at a stated date; and when the date comes; the one who owes the food says; I do not have any food; sell me the food which I owe you with delayed terms. The owner of the food says; This is not good; because the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; forbade selling food until the deal was completed. The one who owes the food says to his creditor; Sell me any kind of food on delayed terms until I discharge the debt to you. This is not good because he gives him food and then he returns it to him. The gold which he gave him becomes the price of that which is his right against him and the food which he gave him becomes what clears what is between them. If they do that; it becomes the sale of food before the deal is complete. Malik spoke about a man who was owed food which he had purchased from a man and this man was owed the like of that food by another man. The one who owed the food said to his creditor; I will refer you to my debtor who owes me the same amount of food as I owe you; so that you may obtain the food which I owe you. Malik said; If the man who had to deliver the food; had gone out; and bought the food to pay off his creditor; that is not good. That is selling food before taking possession of it. If the food is an advance which falls due at that particular time; there is no harm in paying off his creditor with it because that is nota sale. It is not halal to sell food before receiving it in full since the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; forbade that. However; the people of knowledge agree that there is no harm in partnership; transfer of responsibility and revocation in sales of food and other goods. Malik said; That is because the people of knowledge consider it as a favour rendered. They do not consider it as a sale. It is like a man lending light dirhams. He is then paid back in dirhams of full weight; and so gets back more than he lent. That is halal for him and permitted. Had a man bought defective dirhams from him as being the full weight; that would not be halal. MuwataMalik-017-001-35103Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya Ibn Said that AlQasim Ibn Muhammad said; I heard Abdullah Ibn Abbas say; when a man asked him about a man making an advance on some garments and then wanting to sell them back before taking possession of them; That is silver for silver; and he disapproved of it. Malik said; Our opinion is - and Allah knows best that was because he wanted to sell them to the person from whom he had bought them for more than the price for which he bought them. Had he sold them to some one other than the person from whom he had purchased them; there would not have been any harm in it. Malik said; The generally agreed on way of doing things among us concerning making an advance for slaves; cattle or goods is that when all of what is to be sold is described and an advance is made for them for a date; and the date falls due; the buyer does not sell any of that to the person from whom he has purchased it for more than the price which he advanced for it before he has taken full possession of what he has advanced for. It is usury if he does. If the buyer gives the seller dinars or dirhams and he profits with them; then; when the goods come to the buyer and he does not take them into his possession but sells them back to their owner for more than what he advanced for them; the outcome is that what he has advanced has returned to him and has been increased for him. Malik said; If someone advances gold or silver for described animals or goods which are to be delivered before a named date; and the date arrives; or it is before or after the date; there is no harm in the buyer selling those goods to the seller; for other goods; to be taken immediately and not delayed; no matter how extensive the amount of those goods is; except in the case of food because it is not halal to sell it before he has full possession of it. The buyer can sell those goods to some one other than the person from whom he purchased them for gold or silver or any goods. He takes possession of it and does not defer it because if he defers it; that is ugly and there enters into the transaction what is disapproved of: delay for delay. Delay for delay is to sell a debt against one man for a debt against another man. Malik said; If someone advances for goods to be delivered after a time; and those goods are neither something to be eaten nor drunk; he can sell them to whomever he likes for cash or goods; before he takes delivery of them; to some one other than the person from whom he purchased them. He must not sell them to the person from whom he bought them except in exchange for goods which he takes possession of immediately and does not defer. Malik said; If the delivery date for the goods has not arrived; there is no harm in selling them to the original owner for goods which are clearly different and which he takes immediate possession of and does not defer. Malik spoke about the case of a man who advanced dinars or dirhams for four specified pieces of cloth to be delivered before a specified time and when the term fell due; he demanded delivery from the seller and the seller did not have them. He found that the seller had cloth but inferior quality; and the seller said that he would give him eight of those cloths. Malik said; There is no harm in that if he takes the cloths which he offers him before they separate. It is not good if delayed terms enter into the transaction. MuwataMalik-017-001-35107Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that AlQasim Ibn Muhammad was asked about a man who bought goods for 10 dinars cash or fifteen dinars on credit. He disapproved of that and forbade it. Malik said that if a man bought goods from a man for either 10 dinars or 15 dinars on credit; that one of the two prices was obliged on the buyer. It was not to be done because if he postponed paying the ten; it would be 15 on credit; and if he paid the ten; he would buy with it what was worth fifteen dinars on credit. Malik said that it was disapproved of for a man to buy goods from someone for either a dinar cash or for a described sheep on credit and that one of the two prices was obliged on him. It was not to be done because the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; forbade two sales in one sale. This was part of two sales in the one sale. Malik spoke about a man saying to another; I will either buy these fifteen sa of ajwa dates from you; or these ten sa of sayhani dates or I will buy these fifteen sa of inferior wheat or these ten sa of Syrian wheat for a dinar; and one of them is obliged to me. Malik said that it was disapproved of and was not halal. That was because he obliged him ten sa of sayhani; and left them and took fifteen sa of ajwa; or he was obliged fifteen sa of inferior wheat and left them and took ten sa of Syrian wheat. This was also disapproved of; and was not halal. It resembled what was prohibited in the way of two sales in one sale. The Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; asked him; Are you able to free a slave?; and the man said; No. Then he asked him; Are you able to give away a camel?; and the man replied; No. He said; Sit own; and someone brought a large basket of dates to the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; and he said to the man; Take this and give it away as sadaqa. You better shift to the house of your cousin Abdullah Bin Amr Bin Umm Maktum and he is a person of the Bani Fihr branch of the Quraish; and he belonged to that tribe to which Fatima belonged. So I shifted to that house; and when my period of waiting was over; I heard the voice of an announcer making an announcement that the prayer would be observed in the Masjid where congregational prayer is observed. So I set out towards that Masjid and observed prayer along with Allah Messenger ﷺ and I was in the row of the women which was near the row of men. When Allah Messenger ﷺ had finished his prayer; he sat on the pulpit smiling and said: Every worshipper should keep sitting at his place. He then said: Do you know why I had asked you to assemble? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: By Allah. I have not made you assemble for exhortation or for a warning; but I have detained you here; for Tamim Dari; a Christian; who came and accepted Islam; told me something; which agrees with what I was telling; you about the Dajjal. He narrated to me that he had sailed in a ship along with thirty men of Bani Lakhm and Bani Judham and had been tossed by waves in the ocean for a month. Then these waves took them near the land within the ocean island at the time of sunset. They sat in a small side-boat and entered that island. There was a beast with long thick hair and because of these they could not distinguish his face from his back. They said: Woe to you; who can you be? Thereupon it said: I am AlJassasa. They said: What is AlJassasa? And it said: O people; go to this person in the monastery as he is very much eager to know about you. He the narrator said: When it named a person for us we were afraid of it lest it should be a devil. Then we hurriedly went on till we came to that monastery and found a well-built person there with his hands tied to his neck and having iron shackles between his two legs up to the ankles. We said: Woe be upon thee; who are you? And he said: You would soon come to know about me. but tell me who are you. We said: We are people from Arabia and we embarked upon a boat but the sea-waves had been driving us for one month and they brought as near this island. We got Into the side-boats and entered this island and here a beast met us with profusely thick hair and because of the thickness of his hair his face could not be distinguished from his back. We said: Woe be to thee; who are you? It said: I am AlJassasa. We said: What is AlJassasa? And it said: You go to this very person in the monastery for he is eagerly waiting for you to know about you. So we came to you in hot haste fearing that that might be the Devil. He that chained person said: Tell me about the date-palm trees of Baisan. We said: About what aspect of theirs do you seek information? He said: I ask you whether these trees bear fruit or not. We said: yes. Thereupon he said: I think these would not bear fruits. He said: Inform me about the lake of Tabariya? We said: Which aspect of it do you want to know? He said: Is there water in it? They said: There is abundance of water in it. Thereupon he said: I think it would soon become dry. He again said: Inform me about the spring of Zughar. They said: Which aspect of it you want to know? He the chained person said: Is there water in it and does it irrigate the land ? We said to him: Yes; there is abundance of water in it and the inhabitants of Medina irrigate land with the help of it; He said: Inform me about the unlettered Prophet; what has he done? We said: He has come out from Mecca and has settled In Yathrib Medina. He said: Do the Arabs fight against him? We said: Yes. He said: How did he deal with them? We informed him that he had overcome those in his neighbourhood and they had submitted themselves before him. Thereupon he said to us: Has it actually happened? We said: Yes. Thereupon he said: If it is so that is better for them that they should show obedience to him. I am going to tell you about myself and I am Dajjal and would be soon permitted to get out and so I shall get out and travel in the land; and will not spare any town where I would not stay for forty nights except Mecca and Medina as these two places are prohibited areas for me and I would not make an attempt to enter any one of these two. An angel with a sword in his hand would confront me and would bar my way and there would be angels to guard every passage leading to it; then Allah Messenger ﷺ striking the pulpit with the help of the end of his staff said: This implies Taiba meaning Medina. Have I not; told you an account of the Dajjal like this? The people said: Yes; and this account narrated by Tamim Dari was liked by me for it corroborates the account which I gave to you in regard to him Dajjal at Medina and Mecca. Behold he Dajjal is in the Syrian sea Mediterranean or the Yemen sea Arabian sea. Nay; on the contrary; he is in the east; he is in the east; he is in the east; and he pointed with his hand towards the east. Mundhir Bin Jarir reported on the authority of his father: While we were in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the early hours of the morning; some people came there who were barefooted; naked; wearing striped woollen clothes; or cloaks; with their swords hung around their necks. Most of them; nay; all of them; belonged to the tribe of Mudar. The colour of the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ underwent a change when he saw them in poverty. He then entered his house and came out and commanded Bilal to pronounce Adhan. He pronounced Adhan and Iqima; and he the Holy Prophet observed prayer along with his Companion and then addressed them reciting verses of the Holy Quran : 0 people; fear your Lord; Who created you from a single being to the end of the verse; Allah is ever a Watcher over you iv. 1. He then recited a verse of Surat Hashr: Fear Allah. and let every soul consider that which it sends forth for the morrow and fear Allah lix. 18. Then the audience began to vie with one another in giving charity. Some donated a dinar; others a dirham; still others clothes; some donated a sa of wheat; some a sa of dates; till he the Holy Prophet said: Bring even if it is half a date. Then a person from among the Ansar came there with a money bag which his hands could scarcely lift; in fact; they could not lift. Then the people followed continuously; till I saw two heaps of eatables and clothes; and I saw the face of the Messenger ﷺ glistening; like gold on account of joy. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He who sets a good precedent in Islam; there is a reward for him for this act of goodness and reward of that also who acted according to it subsequently; without any deduction from their rewards; and he who sets in Islam an evil precedent; there is upon him the burden of that; and the burden of him also who acted upon it subsequently; without any deduction from their burden. Narrated Aisha: the wife of the Prophet I never remembered my parents believing in any religion other than the true religion i.e. Islam ; and I dont remember a single day passing without our being visited by Allah Messenger ﷺ in the morning and in the evening. When the Muslims were put to test i.e. troubled by the pagans ; Abu Bakr set out migrating to the land of Ethiopia; and when he reached Bark AlGhimad; Ibn AlDaghina; the chief of the tribe of Qara; met him and said; O Abu Bakr! Where are you going? Abu Bakr replied; My people have turned me out of my country ; so I want to wander on the earth and worship my Lord. Ibn AlDaghina said; O Abu Bakr! A man like you should not leave his home-land; nor should he be driven out; because you help the destitute; earn their livings; and you keep good relations with your Kith and kin; help the weak and poor; entertain guests generously; and help the calamity-stricken persons. Therefore I am your protector. Go back and worship your Lord in your town. So Abu Bakr returned and Ibn AlDaghina accompanied him. In the evening Ibn AlDaghina visited the nobles of Quraish and said to them. A man like Abu Bakr should not leave his homeland; nor should he be driven out. Do you i.e. Quraish drive out a man who helps the destitute; earns their living; keeps good relations with his Kith and kin; helps the weak and poor; entertains guests generously and helps the calamity-stricken persons? So the people of Quraish could not refuse Ibn AlDaghina protection; and they said to Ibn AlDaghina; Let Abu Bakr worship his Lord in his house. He can pray and recite there whatever he likes; but he should not hurt us with it; and should not do it publicly; because we are afraid that he may affect our women and children. Ibn AlDaghina told Abu Bakr of all that. Abu Bakr stayed in that state; worshipping his Lord in his house. He did not pray publicly; nor did he recite Quran outside his house. Then a thought occurred to Abu Bakr to build a Masjid in front of his house; and there he used to pray and recite the Quran. The women and children of the pagans began to gather around him in great number. They used to wonder at him and look at him. Abu Bakr was a man who used to weep too much; and he could not help weeping on reciting the Quran. That situation scared the nobles of the pagans of Quraish; so they sent for Ibn AlDaghina. When he came to them; they said; We accepted your protection of Abu Bakr on condition that he should worship his Lord in his house; but he has violated the conditions and he has built a Masjid in front of his house where he prays and recites the Quran publicly. We are now afraid that he may affect our women and children unfavorably. So; prevent him from that. If he likes to confine the worship of his Lord to his house; he may do so; but if he insists on doing that openly; ask him to release you from your obligation to protect him; for we dislike to break our pact with you; but we deny Abu Bakr the right to announce his act publicly. Ibn AlDaghina went to Abu Bakr and said; O Abu Bakr! You know well what contract I have made on your behalf; now; you are either to abide by it; or else release me from my obligation of protecting you; because I do not want the Arabs hear that my people have dishonored a contract I have made on behalf of another man. Abu Bakr replied; I release you from your pact to protect me; and am pleased with the protection from Allah. At that time the Prophet ﷺ was in Mecca; and he said to the Muslims; In a dream I have been shown your migration place; a land of date palm trees; between two mountains; the two stony tracts. So; some people migrated to Medina; and most of those people who had previously migrated to the land of Ethiopia; returned to Medina. Abu Bakr also prepared to leave for Medina; but Allah Messenger ﷺ said to him; Wait for a while; because I hope that I will be allowed to migrate also. Abu Bakr said; Do you indeed expect this? Let my father be sacrificed for you! The Prophet ﷺ said; Yes. So Abu Bakr did not migrate for the sake of Allah Messenger ﷺ in order to accompany him. He fed two camels he possessed with the leaves of AlSamur tree that fell on being struck by a stick for four months. One day; while we were sitting in Abu Bakr house at noon; someone said to Abu Bakr; This is Allah Messenger ﷺ with his head covered coming at a time at which he never used to visit us before. Abu Bakr said; May my parents be sacrificed for him. By Allah; he has not come at this hour except for a great necessity. So Allah Messenger ﷺ came and asked permission to enter; and he was allowed to enter. When he entered; he said to Abu Bakr. Tell everyone who is present with you to go away. Abu Bakr replied; There are none but your family. May my father be sacrificed for you; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! The Prophet ﷺ said; i have been given permission to migrate. Abu Bakr said; Shall I accompany you? May my father be sacrificed for you; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Allah Messenger ﷺ said; Yes. Abu Bakr said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! May my father be sacrificed for you; take one of these two camels of mine. Allah Messenger ﷺ replied; I will accept it with payment. So we prepared the baggage quickly and put some journey food in a leather bag for them. Asma; Abu Bakr daughter; cut a piece from her waist belt and tied the mouth of the leather bag with it; and for that reason she was named Dhat Alun-Nitaqain i.e. the owner of two belts. Then Allah Messenger ﷺ and Abu Bakr reached a cave on the mountain of Thaur and stayed there for three nights. Abdullah Bin Abi Bakr who was intelligent and a sagacious youth; used to stay with them aver night. He used to leave them before day break so that in the morning he would be with Quraish as if he had spent the night in Mecca. He would keep in mind any plot made against them; and when it became dark he would go and inform them of it. Amir Bin Fuhaira; the freed slave of Abu Bakr; used to bring the milch sheep of his master; Abu Bakr to them a little while after nightfall in order to rest the sheep there. So they always had fresh milk at night; the milk of their sheep; and the milk which they warmed by throwing heated stones in it. Amir Bin Fuhaira would then call the herd away when it was still dark before daybreak. He did the same in each of those three nights. Allah Messenger ﷺ and Abu Bakr had hired a man from the tribe of Bani AlDail from the family of Bani Abd Bin Adi as an expert guide; and he was in alliance with the family of AlAs Bin Wail AlSahmi and he was on the religion of the infidels of Quraish. The Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr trusted him and gave him their two camels and took his promise to bring their two she camels to the cave of the mountain of Thaur in the morning after three nights later. Narrated Ubadah Bin AlSamit: That the Prophet ﷺ said: Gold for gold; kind for kind; silver for silver; kind for kind; dried-dates for dried-dates; kind for kind; wheat for wheat; kind for kind; salt for salt; kind for kind; and barley for barley; kind for kind. Whoever increases or seeks an increase; then he dealt with Riba. Sell gold for silver as you wish; hand to hand; and sell wheat for dried-dates as you wish; hand to hand; and sell barley for dried-dates as you wish; hand to hand.[He said:] There are narrations on this topic from Abu Saeed; Abu Huraira; Bilal; And Anas.[Abu Eisa said:] The Hadith of Ubadah Bin AlSamit isHassan Sahih. Some of them reported this Hadith from Khalid; with this chain; and he said: Sell wheat for barley as you wish; hand to hand.Some of them reported this Hadith from Khalid; from Abu Qilabah; from Ashath; from Ubadah from the Prophet ﷺ. In that Hadith; they added that Khalid said: Abu Qilabah said: Sell wheat for barley as you wish; hand to hand.This Hadith is acted upon according to the people of knowledge; they do not think that one may sell wheat for wheat except when it is the same kind for the same kind; and the same for barely in exchange for barley; kind for kind. When the items are themselves different; then there is no harm in one being more than the other if it is hand to hand. This is saying of most of the people of knowledge among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and others. It is the view of Sufyan AlThawri; AlShafii; Ahmad; and Ishaq. AlShafii said: And the proof for that is the saying of the Prophet ﷺ : Sell barley for wheat as you wish; hand to hand.[Abu Eisa said:] Some of the people of knowledge considered it disliked that wheat be sold for barely unless it was kind for kind.   1. Narrated Amr Bin Maimun: I saw Umar Bin AlKhattab a few days before he was stabbed in Medina. He was standing with Hudhaifa Bin AlYaman and Uthman Bin Hunaif to whom he said; What have you done? Do you think that you have imposed more taxation on the land of AlSwad i.e. Iraq than it can bear? They replied; We have imposed on it what it can bear because of its great yield. Umar again said; Check whether you have imposed on the land what it can not bear. They said; No; we havent. Umar added; If Allah should keep me alive I will let the widows of Iraq need no men to support them after me. But only four days had elapsed when he was stabbed to death. The day he was stabbed; I was standing and there was nobody between me and him i.e. Umar except Abdullah Bin Abbas. Whenever Umar passed between the two rows; he would say; Stand in straight lines. When he saw no defect in the rows ; he would go forward and start the prayer with Takbir. He would recite Surat Yousif or AlNahl or the like in the first raka so that the people may have the time to Join the prayer. As soon as he said Takbir; I heard him saying; The dog has killed or eaten me; at the time he i.e. the murderer stabbed him. A non-Arab infidel proceeded on carrying a double-edged knife and stabbing all the persons he passed by on the right and left till he stabbed thirteen persons out of whom seven died. When one of the Muslims saw that; he threw a cloak on him. Realizing that he had been captured; the non-Arab infidel killed himself; Umar held the hand of Abdulrahman Bin Auf and let him lead the prayer. Those who were standing by the side of Umar saw what I saw; but the people who were in the other parts of the Masjid did not see anything; but they lost the voice of Umar and they were saying; Subhan Allah! Subhan Allah! i.e. Glorified be Allah. Abdulrahman Bin Auf led the people a short prayer. When they finished the prayer; Umar said; O Ibn Abbas! Find out who attacked me. Ibn Abbas kept on looking here and there for a short time and came to say. The slave of AlMughira. On that Umar said; The craftsman? Ibn Abbas said; Yes. Umar said; May Allah curse him. I did not treat him unjustly. All the Praises are for Allah Who has not caused me to die at the hand of a man who claims himself to be a Muslim. No doubt; you and your father Abbas used to love to have more non-Arab infidels in Medina. AlAbbas had the greatest number of slaves. Ibn Abbas said to Umar. If you wish; we will do. He meant; If you wish we will kill them. Umar said; You are mistaken for you cant kill them after they have spoken your language; prayed towards your Qibla; and performed Hajj like yours. Then Umar was carried to his house; and we went along with him; and the people were as if they had never suffered a calamity before. Some said; Do not worry he will be Alright soon. Some said; We are afraid that he will die. Then an infusion of dates was brought to him and he drank it but it came out of the wound of his belly. Then milk was brought to him and he drank it; and it also came out of his belly. The people realized that he would die. We went to him; and the people came; praising him. A young man came saying; O chief of the believers! Receive the glad tidings from Allah to you due to your company with Allah Messenger ﷺ and your superiority in Islam which you know. Then you became the ruler i.e. Caliph and you ruled with justice and finally you have been martyred. Umar said; I wish that all these privileges will counterbalance my shortcomings so that I will neither lose nor gain anything. When the young man turned back to leave; his clothes seemed to be touching the ground. Umar said; Call the young man back to me. When he came back Umar said; O son of my brother! Lift your clothes; for this will keep your clothes clean and save you from the Punishment of your Lord. Umar further said; O Abdullah Bin Umar! See how much I am in debt to others. When the debt was checked; it amounted to approximately eighty-six thousand. Umar said; If the property of Umar family covers the debt; then pay the debt thereof; otherwise request it from Bani Adi Bin Kaab and if that too is not sufficient; ask for it from Quraish tribe; and do not ask for it from any one else; and pay this debt on my behalf. Umar then said to Abdullah ; Go to Aisha the mother of the believers and say: Umar is paying his salutation to you. But dont say: The chief of the believers; because today I am not the chief of the believers. And say: Umar Bin AlKhattab asks the permission to be buried with his two companions i.e. the Prophet; and Abu Bakr. Abdullah greeted Aisha and asked for the permission for entering; and then entered to her and found her sitting and weeping. He said to her; Umar Bin AlKhattab is paying his salutations to you; and asks the permission to be buried with his two companions. She said; I had the idea of having this place for myself; but today I prefer Umar to myself. When he returned it was said to Umar ; Abdullah Bin Umar has come. Umar said; Make me sit up. Somebody supported him against his body and Umar asked Abdullah ; What news do you have? He said; O chief of the believers! It is as you wish. She has given the permission. Umar said; Praise be to Allah; there was nothing more important to me than this. So when I die; take me; and greet Aisha and say: Umar Bin AlKhattab asks the permission to be buried with the Prophet ﷺ ; and if she gives the permission; bury me there; and if she refuses; then take me to the grave-yard of the Muslims. Then Hafsa the mother of the believers came with many other women walking with her. When we saw her; we went away. She went in to Umar and wept there for sometime. When the men asked for permission to enter; she went into another place; and we heard her weeping inside. The people said to Umar ; O chief of the believers! Appoint a successor. Umar said; I do not find anyone more suitable for the job than the following persons or group whom Allah Messenger ﷺ had been pleased with before he died. Then Umar mentioned Ali; Uthman; AlZubair; Talha ; Saad and Abdulrahman bin Auf and said; Abdullah Bin Umar will be a witness to you; but he will have no share in the rule. His being a witness will compensate him for not sharing the right of ruling. If Saad becomes the ruler; it will be alright: otherwise; whoever becomes the ruler should seek his help; as I have not dismissed him because of disability or dishonesty. Umar added; I recommend that my successor takes care of the early emigrants; to know their rights and protect their honor and sacred things. I also recommend that he be kind to the Ansar who had lived in Medina before the emigrants and Belief had entered their hearts before them. I recommend that the ruler should accept the good of the righteous among them and excuse their wrong-doers; and I recommend that he should do good to all the people of the towns AlAnsar ; as they are the protectors of Islam and the source of wealth and the source of annoyance to the enemy. I also recommend that nothing be taken from them except from their surplus with their consent. I also recommend that he do good to the Arab bedouin; as they are the origin of the Arabs and the material of Islam. He should take from what is inferior; amongst their properties and distribute that to the poor amongst them. I also recommend him concerning Allah and His Apostle protectees i.e. Dhimmis to fulfill their contracts and to fight for them and not to overburden them with what is beyond their ability. So when Umar expired; we carried him out and set out walking. Abdullah Bin Umar greeted Aisha and said; Umar Bin AlKhattab asks for the permission. Aisha said; Bring him in. He was brought in and buried beside his two companions. When he was buried; the group recommended by Umar held a meeting. Then Abdulrahman said; Reduce the candidates for rulership to three of you. AlZubair said; I give up my right to Ali. Talha said; I give up my right to Uthman; Sad; I give up my right to Abdulrahman Bin Auf. Abdulrahman then said to Uthman and Ali ; Now which of you is willing to give up his right of candidacy to that he may choose the better of the remaining two; bearing in mind that Allah and Islam will be his witnesses. So both the sheiks i.e. Uthman and Ali kept silent. Abdulrahman said; Will you both leave this matter to me; and I take Allah as my Witness that I will not choose but the better of you? They said; Yes. So Abdulrahman took the hand of one of them i.e. Ali and said; You are related to Allah Messenger ﷺ and one of the earliest Muslims as you know well. So I ask you by Allah to promise that if I select you as a ruler you will do justice; and if I select Uthman as a ruler you will listen to him and obey him. Then he took the other i.e. Uthman Aasi de and said the same to him. When Abdulrahman secured their agreement to this covenant; he said; O Uthman! Raise your hand. So he i.e. Abdulrahman gave him i.e. Uthman the solemn pledge; and then Ali gave him the pledge of allegiance and then all the Medina people gave him the pledge of allegiance. Ibn Shihab further reported that Abdulrahman Bin Abdullah Bin Kaab informed him that Abdullah Bin Kaab who served as the guide of Kaab Bin Malik as he became blind that he heard Kaab Bin Malik narrate the story of his remaining behind Allah Messenger ﷺ from the Battle of Tabuk. Kaab Bin Malik said: I never remained behind Allah Messenger ﷺ from any expedition which he undertook except the Battle of Tabuk and that of the Battle of Badr. So far as the Battle of Badr is concerned; nobody was blamed for remaining behind as Allah Messenger ﷺ and the Muslims did not set out for attack but for waylaying the caravan of the Quraish; but it was Allah Who made them confront their enemies without their intention to do so. I had the honour to be with Allah Messenger ﷺ on the night of Aqaba when we pledged our allegiance to Islam and it was more dear to me than my participation in the Battle of Badr; although Badr was more popular amongst people as compared with that Tabuk. And this is my story of remaining back from Allah Messenger ﷺ on the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk. Never did I possess means enough and my circumstances more favourable than at the occasion of this expedition. And; by Allah; I had never before this expedition simultaneously in my possession two rides. Allah Messenger ﷺ set out for this expedition in extremely hot season; the journey was long and the land which he and his army had to cover was waterless and he had to confront a large army; so he informed the Muslims about the actual situation they had to face ; so that they should adequately equip themselves for this expedition; and he also told them the destination where he intended to go. And the Muslims who accompanied Allah Messenger ﷺ at that time were large in numbers but there was no proper record of them. Kaab further said: Few were the persons who wanted to absent themselves; and were under the impression that they could easily conceal themselves and thus remain undetected until revelations from Allah; the Exalted and Glorious descended in connection with them. And Allah Messenger ﷺ set out on an expedition when the fruits were ripe and their shadows had been lengthened. I had weakness for them and it was during this season that Allah Messenger ﷺ made preparations and the Muslims too along with them. I also set out in the morning so that I should make preparations along with them but I came back and did nothing and said to myself: I have means enough to make preparations as soon as I like. And I went on doing this postponing my preparations until people were about to depart and it was in the morning that Allah Messenger ﷺ set out and the Muslims too along with him; but I made no preparations. I went early in the morning and came back; but I made no decision. I continued to do so until they the Muslims hastened and covered a good deal of distance. I also made up my mind to march on and to meet them. Would that I had done that but perhaps it was not destined for me. After the departure of Allah Messenger ﷺ as I went out amongst people; I was shocked to find that I did not find anyone like me but people who were labelled as hypocrites or the people whom Allah granted exemption because of their incapacity and Allah Messenger ﷺ took no notice of me until he had reached Tabuk. One day as he was sitting amongst the people in Tabuk he said: What has happened to Kaab Bin Malik? A person from Banu Salama said: Allah Messenger; the beauty of his cloak and his appreciation of his sides have allured him and he was thus detained. Muadh Bin Jabal said: Woe be upon that what you contend. Allah Messenger; by Allah; we know nothing about him but good. Allah Messenger ﷺ ; however; kept quiet. It was during that time that he the Holy Prophet saw a person dressed in all white garment shattering the illusion of eye mirage. Thereupon Allah Messenger ﷺ said: May he be Abu Khaithama and; lo; it was Abu Khaithama AlAnsari and he was that person who contributed a sa of dates and was scoffed at by the hypocrites. Kaab Bin Malik farther said: When this news reached me that Allah Messenger ﷺ was on his way back from Tabuk I was greatly perturbed. I thought of fabricating false stories and asked myself how I would save myself from his anger on the following day. In this connection; I sought the help of every prudent man from amongst the members of my family and when it was said to me that Allah Messenger ﷺ was about to arrive; all the false ideas banished from my mind and I came to the conclusion that nothing could save me but the telling of truth; so I decided to speak the truth and it was in the morning that Allah Messenger ﷺ arrived in Medina. And it was his habit that as he came back from a journey he first went to the Masjid and observed two Rakahs of nafl prayer as a mark of gratitude and then sat amongst people. And as he did that; those who had remained behind him began to put forward their excuses and take an oath before him and they were more than eighty persons. Allah Messenger ﷺ accepted their excuses on the very face of them and accepted their allegiance and sought forgiveness for them and left their secret intentions to Allah; until I presented myself to him. I greeted him and he smiled and there was a tinge of anger in that. He the Holy Prophet then said to me: Come forward. I went forward until I sat in front of him. He said to me: What kept you back? Could you not afford to go in for a ride? I said: Allah Messenger; by Allah; if I were to sit in the presence of anybody else from amongst the worldly people I would have definitely saved myself from his anger on one pretext or the other and I have also the knack to fall into argumentation; but; by Allah; I am fully aware of the fact that if I were to put forward before you a false excuse to please you Allah would definitely provoke your wrath upon me; and if I speak the truth you may be annoyed with me; but I hope that Allah would make its end well and; by Allah; there is no valid excuse for me. By Allah; I never possessed so good means; and I never had such favourable conditions for me as I had when I stayed behind you failed to join the expedition. Thereupon; Allah Messenger ﷺ said: This man told the truth; so get up until Allah gives a decision in your case. I stood up and some people of Banu Salama followed me in hot haste; and they said to me: By Allah; we do not know about you that you committed a sin prior to this. You; however; showed inability to put forward an excuse before Allah Messenger ﷺ as those who stayed behind him have put forward excuses. It would have been enough for the forgiveness of your sin that Allah Messenger ﷺ would have sought forgiveness for you. By Allah; they continued to incite me until I thought of going back to Allah Messenger ﷺ and contradict myself. Then I said to them: Has anyone else also met the same fate? They said: Yes; two persons have met the same fate as has fallen to you and they have made the sane statement as you have made; and the same verdict has been delivered in their case as it has been delivered in your case. I said: Who are they? They said: Murara Bin AlRabia Amiri and Hilal Bin Umaya AlWaqafi. They made a mention of these two pious persons to me who had participated in the Battle of Badr and there was an example for me in them. I went away when they named these two persons. Allah Messenger ﷺ forbade the Nluslims to talk with three of us from amongst those persons who had stayed behind him. The people began to avoid us and their attitude towards us underwent a change and it seemed as if the whole atmosphere had turned hostile against us and it was in fact the same atmosphere ot which I was fully aware and in which I had lived for a fairly long time. We spent fifty nights in this very state and my two friends confined themselves withen their houses and spent most of the time in weeping; but as I was young and strong amongst them I got out of my house ; participated in congregational prayers; moved about in the bazar; but none spoke to me. I came to Allah Messenger ﷺ as he sat amongst people after the prayer; greeted him and asked myself whether his lips stirred in response to my greetings or not. Then I observed prayer beside him and looked at him with stealing glances and when I attended to my prayer; he looked at me and when I cast a glance at him he turned away his eyes from me. And when the harsh treatment of the Muslims towards me extended to a considerable length of time; I walked until I climbed upon the wall of the garden of Abu Qatada; and he was my cousin; and I had the greatest love for him. I greeted him but; by Allah; he did not respond to my greetings. I said to him: Abu Qatada; I adjure you by Allah; arnt you well aware of the fact that I love Allah and His Messenger ﷺ the most. He kept quiet. I again repeated saying: I adjure you by Allah. arnt you well aware of the fact that I love Allah and His Messenger ﷺ the most. He kept quiet. I again adjured him; whereupon he said: Allah and the Messenger ﷺ are best aware of it. My eyes began to shed tears and I came back climbing down from the wall and as I was walking in the bazar of Medina a Nabatean from amongst the Nabateans of Syria; who had come to sell foodgrains in Medina; asked people to direct him to Kaab Bin Malik. People gave him the indication by pointing towards me. He came to me and delivered to me a letter of the King of Ghassan and as I was a scribe I read that letter and it was written like this: Coming to my point; it has been conveyed to us that your friend the Holy Prophet is subjecting you to cruelty and Allah has not created you for a place where you are to be degraded and where you cannot find your right place; so you come to us that we should accord you honour. As I read that letter I said: This is also a calamity; so I burnt it in the oven. When out of the fifty days; forty days had passed and Allah Messenger ﷺ received no revelation; there came the messenger of Allah Messenger ﷺ to me and said: Verily; Allah Messenger ﷺ has commanded you to remain separate from your wife. I said: Should I divorce her or what else should I do? He said: No; but only remain separate from her and dont have sexual contact with her. The same message was sent to my companions. So I said to my wife: You better go to your parents and stay there with them until Allah gives the decision in my case. The wife of Hilal Bin Umaya came to Allah Messenger ﷺ and said: Allah Messenger; Hilal Bin Umaya is a senile person; he has no servant. Do you disapprove of my serving him? He said: No; but dont go near him. She said: By Allah; he has no such instinct in him. By Allah; he spends his time in weeping from that day to this day. Some of the members of my family said to me: Were you to seek permission from Allah Messenger ﷺ in regard to your wife as he has granted permission to the wife of Hilal Bin Umaya to serve him. I said: I would not seek permission from Allah Messenger ﷺ ; for I cannot say what Allah Apostle may say in response to seeking my permission. Moreover; I am a young man. It was in this state that I spent ten more nights and thus fifty nights had passed that people had observed boycott with us. It was on the morning of the fiftieth night that I observed my dawn prayer and was sitting on one of the roofs of our houses. And I was in fact sitting in that very state which Allah; the Exalted and Glorious; has described about us in these words: Life had become hard for myself and the earth had compressed despite its vastness; that I heard the noise of an announcer from the peak of the hill of Sal saying at the top of his voice: Kaab Bin Malik; there is glad tidings for you. I fell down in prostration and came to realise that there was a message of relief for me. Allah Messenger ﷺ had informed the people of the acceptance of our repentance by Allah as he offered the dawn prayer. So the people went on to give us glad tidings and some of them went to my friends in order to give them the glad tidings and a person galloped his horse and came from the tribe of Aslam and his horse reached me more quickly than his voice. And when he came to me whose sound I heard; he gave me the glad tidings. I took off my clothes and clothed him with them because of his bringing good news to me and; by Allah; I possessed nothing else in the form of clothes than these two on that occasion; and I asked one to lend me two clothes and dressed myself in them. I came to Allah Messenger ﷺ and on my way I met groups of people who greeted me because of the acceptance of repentance and they said: Here is a greeting for you for your repentance being accepted by Allah. I moved on until I came to the Masjid and Allah Messenger ﷺ had been sitting there amongst persons. So Talha Bin Ubaidullah got up and rushed towards me and he shook hands with me and greeted me and; by Allah; no person stood up to greet me from amongst the emigrants except he. Kaab said that he never forgot this good gesture of Talha. Kaab further said: I greeted Allah Messenger ﷺ with Assalam-o-Alaikam and his face was glistening because of delight; and he said: Let there be glad tidings and blessings for you; the like of which you have neither found nor you will find; as you find today since your mother gave your birth. I said: Allah Messenger. is this acceptance of repentance from you or from Allah? He said: No; it is not from ma ; it is from Allah; and it was common with Allah Messenger ﷺ that as he was happy his face brightened up and it looked like a part of the moon and it was from this that we recognised it his delight. As I sat before him; I said: Allah Messenger; am I allowed to give in charity my wealth for Allah sake and for the sake of His Messenger ﷺ ? Thereupon Allah Messenger ﷺ said: Keep some property with you as it is better for you. I said: I shall keep with me that part of my property which fell to my lot on the occasion of the expedition of Khaibar. I said: Allah Messenger; verily; Allah has granted me salvation because of truth and; therefore; I think that repentance implies that I should not speak anything but truth as long as I live. He said: By Allah; I do not know whether anyone amongst the Muslims was put to more severe trial than I by Allah because of telling the truth. And since I made a mention of this to Allah Messenger ﷺ up to this day I have not told any lie and; by Allah; I have decided not to tell a lie and I hope that Allah would save me from trials for the rest of my life and Allah; the Exalted and Glorious; revealed these verses: Certainly; Allah has turned in Mercy to the Prophet and the emigrants and the helpers who followed him in the hour of hardship after the hearts of a part of them were about to deviate; then He turned to them in mercy. Surely; to them He is Compassionate; Merciful and He turned in Mercy to the three who were left behind until the earth despite its vastness became strait for them and their souls were also straitened to them. And this revelation reached up to the words : O you who believe; develop God consciousness; and be with the truthful ix. 117-118. Kaab said: By Allah; since Allah directed me to Islam there has been no blessing more significant for me than this truth of mine which I spoke to Allah Messenger ﷺ and if I were to tell a lie I would have been ruined as were ruined those who told lies; for in regard to those who told lies Allah used harshest words used for anyone as He descended revelation and the words of Allah are : They will swear by Allah to you when you retu n to them so that you may leave them alone. So leave them alone. Surely; they are unclean and their resort is Hell; recompense for what they earned. They will swear to you that you may be pleased with them but if you are pleased with them; yet surely Allah is not pleased with the transgressing people ix. 95-96. Kaab said that the matter of us three persons was deferred as compared with those who took an oath in the presence of Allahs Messenger ﷺ and he accepted their allegiance and sought forgiveness for them and Allah did not give any decision in regard to us. It was Allah; the Exalted and Glorious; Who gave decisions in our case; three who remained behind. The words of the Quran the three who were left behind do not mean that we remained back from Jihad but these imply that He kept our matter behind them who took oath and presented excuse before Him. This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Zuhri with the same chain of transmitters. SahihMuslim-017-001-19381
  3. Abdullah Bin Umar reported that Umar said When Khaibar was conquered; the Jews asked the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ to confirm that they would do all the cultivation and have half the produce. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ said I shall confirm you on that condition as long as we wish. So they were confirmed on that condition. The dates from half the produce of Khaibar were divided into a number of portions. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ would take the fifth. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ used to contribute from the fifth one hundred wasqs of dates and twenty wasqs of wheat to each of his wives. When Umar intended to expel the Jews from Khaibar he sent a message to the wives of the Prophet ﷺ and said to them If any of you wishes that I divide the palm trees for her by their assessment that amounts one hundred wasqs of dates and to her belongs their root; their land and their water and likewise twenty wasqs from the produce of the cultivated land by assessment; I shall do that. And if any of you wishes that we take out her portion from the fifth; we shall do that. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-29279

Amir Bin Sharahil Shabi Shab Hamdan reported that he asked Fatima; daughter of Qais and sister of AlDahhak Bin Qais and she was the first amongst the emigrant women: Narrate to me a hadith which you had heard directly from Allah Messenger ﷺ and there is no extra link in between them. She said: Very well; if you like; I am prepared to do that; and he said to her: Well; do It and narrate that to me. She said: I married the son of Mughira and he was a chosen young man of Quraish at that time; but he fell as a martyr in the first Jihad fighting on the side of Allah Messenger ﷺ. When I became a widow; Abdulrahman Bin Auf; one amongst the group of the Companions of Allah Messenger ﷺ ; sent me the proposal of marriage. Allah Messenger ﷺ also sent me such a message for his freed slave Usama Bin Zaid. And it had been conveyed to me that Allah Messenger ﷺ had said about Usama : He who loves me should also love Usama. When Allah Messenger ﷺ talked to me about this matter ; I said: My affairs are in your hand. You may marry me to anyone whom you like. He said: You better shift now to the house of Umm Sharik; and Umm Sharik was a rich lady from amongst the Ansar. She spent generously for the cause of Allah and entertained guests very hospitably. I said: Well; I will do as you like. He said: Do not do that for Umm Sharik is a woman who is very frequently visited by guests and I do not like that your head may be uncovered or the cloth may be removed from your shank and the strangers may catch sight of them which you abhor. You better shift to the house of your cousin Abdullah Bin Amr Bin Umm Maktum and he is a person of the Bani Fihr branch of the Quraish; and he belonged to that tribe to which Fatima belonged. So I shifted to that house; and when my period of waiting was over; I heard the voice of an announcer making an announcement that the prayer would be observed in the Masjid where congregational prayer is observed. So I set out towards that Masjid and observed prayer along with Allah Messenger ﷺ and I was in the row of the women which was near the row of men. When Allah Messenger ﷺ had finished his prayer; he sat on the pulpit smiling and said: Every worshipper should keep sitting at his place. He then said: Do you know why I had asked you to assemble? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: By Allah. I have not made you assemble for exhortation or for a warning; but I have detained you here; for Tamim Dari; a Christian; who came and accepted Islam; told me something; which agrees with what I was telling; you about the Dajjal. He narrated to me that he had sailed in a ship along with thirty men of Bani Lakhm and Bani Judham and had been tossed by waves in the ocean for a month. Then these waves took them near the land within the ocean island at the time of sunset. They sat in a small side-boat and entered that island. There was a beast with long thick hair and because of these they could not distinguish his face from his back. They said: Woe to you; who can you be? Thereupon it said: I am AlJassasa. They said: What is AlJassasa? And it said: O people; go to this person in the monastery as he is very much eager to know about you. He the narrator said: When it named a person for us we were afraid of it lest it should be a devil. Then we hurriedly went on till we came to that monastery and found a well-built person there with his hands tied to his neck and having iron shackles between his two legs up to the ankles. We said: Woe be upon thee; who are you? And he said: You would soon come to know about me. but tell me who are you. We said: We are people from Arabia and we embarked upon a boat but the sea-waves had been driving us for one month and they brought as near this island. We got Into the side-boats and entered this island and here a beast met us with profusely thick hair and because of the thickness of his hair his face could not be distinguished from his back. We said: Woe be to thee; who are you? It said: I am AlJassasa. We said: What is AlJassasa? And it said: You go to this very person in the monastery for he is eagerly waiting for you to know about you. So we came to you in hot haste fearing that that might be the Devil. He that chained person said: Tell me about the date-palm trees of Baisan. We said: About what aspect of theirs do you seek information? He said: I ask you whether these trees bear fruit or not. We said: yes. Thereupon he said: I think these would not bear fruits. He said: Inform me about the lake of Tabariya? We said: Which aspect of it do you want to know? He said: Is there water in it? They said: There is abundance of water in it. Thereupon he said: I think it would soon become dry. He again said: Inform me about the spring of Zughar. They said: Which aspect of it you want to know? He the chained person said: Is there water in it and does it irrigate the land ? We said to him: Yes; there is abundance of water in it and the inhabitants of Medina irrigate land with the help of it; He said: Inform me about the unlettered Prophet; what has he done? We said: He has come out from Mecca and has settled In Yathrib Medina. He said: Do the Arabs fight against him? We said: Yes. He said: How did he deal with them? We informed him that he had overcome those in his neighbourhood and they had submitted themselves before him. Thereupon he said to us: Has it actually happened? We said: Yes. Thereupon he said: If it is so that is better for them that they should show obedience to him. I am going to tell you about myself and I am Dajjal and would be soon permitted to get out and so I shall get out and travel in the land; and will not spare any town where I would not stay for forty nights except Mecca and Medina as these two places are prohibited areas for me and I would not make an attempt to enter any one of these two. An angel with a sword in his hand would confront me and would bar my way and there would be angels to guard every passage leading to it; then Allah Messenger ﷺ striking the pulpit with the help of the end of his staff said: This implies Taiba meaning Medina. Have I not; told you an account of the Dajjal like this? The people said: Yes; and this account narrated by Tamim Dari was liked by me for it corroborates the account which I gave to you in regard to him Dajjal at Medina and Mecca. Behold he Dajjal is in the Syrian sea Mediterranean or the Yemen sea Arabian sea. Nay; on the contrary; he is in the east; he is in the east; he is in the east; and he pointed with his hand towards the east.   5. Narrated Imran: Once we were traveling with the Prophet ﷺ and we carried on traveling till the last part of the night and then we halted at a place and slept deeply. There is nothing sweeter than sleep for a traveler in the last part of the night. So it was only the heat of the sun that made us to wake up and the first to wake up was so and so; then so and so and then so and so the narrator Auf said that Abu Raja had told him their names but he had forgotten them and the fourth person to wake up was Umar Bin AlKhattab. And whenever the Prophet ﷺ used to sleep; nobody would wake up him till he himself used to get up as we did not know what was happening being revealed to him in his sleep. So; Umar got up and saw the condition of the people; and he was a strict man; so he said; Allahu Akbar and raised his voice with Takbir; and kept on saying loudly till the Prophet ﷺ got up because of it. When he got up; the people informed him about what had happened to them. He said; There is no harm or it will not be harmful. Depart! So they departed from that place; and after covering some distance the Prophet ﷺ stopped and asked for some water to perform the ablution. So he performed the ablution and the call for the prayer was pronounced and he led the people in prayer. After he finished from the prayer; he saw a man sitting aloof who had not prayed with the people. He asked; O so and so! What has prevented you from praying with us? He replied; I am Junub and there is no water. The Prophet ﷺ said; Perform Tayammum with clean earth and that is sufficient for you. Then the Prophet ﷺ proceeded on and the people complained to him of thirst. Thereupon he got down and called a person the narrator Auf added that Abu Raja had named him but he had forgotten and Ali; and ordered them to go and bring water. So they went in search of water and met a woman who was sitting on her camel between two bags of water. They asked; Where can we find water? She replied; I was there at the place of water this hour yesterday and my people are behind me. They requested her to accompany them. She asked; Where? They said; To Allah Messenger ﷺ. She said; Do you mean the man who is called the Sabi; with a new religion ? They replied; Yes; the same person. So come along. They brought her to the Prophet ﷺ and narrated the whole story. He said; Help her to dismount. The Prophet ﷺ asked for a pot; then he opened the mouths of the bags and poured some water into the pot. Then he closed the big openings of the bags and opened the small ones and the people were called upon to drink and water their animals. So they all watered their animals and they too all quenched their thirst and also gave water to others and last of all the Prophet ﷺ gave a pot full of water to the person who was Junub and told him to pour it over his body. The woman was standing and watching all that which they were doing with her water. By Allah; when her water bags were returned the looked like as if they were more full of water than they had been before Miracle of Allah Messenger ﷺ Then the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to collect something for her; so dates; flour and Sawiq were collected which amounted to a good meal that was put in a piece of cloth. She was helped to ride on her camel and that cloth full of foodstuff was also placed in front of her and then the Prophet ﷺ said to her; We have not taken your water but Allah has given water to us. She returned home late. Her relatives asked her: O so and so what has delayed you? She said; A strange thing! Two men met me and took me to the man who is called the Sabi and he did such and such a thing. By Allah; he is either the greatest magician between this and this gesturing with her index and middle fingers raising them towards the sky indicating the heaven and the earth or he is Allah true Apostle. Afterwards the Muslims used to attack the pagans around her abode but never touched her village. One day she said to her people; I think that these people leave you purposely. Have you got any inclination to Islam? They obeyed her and all of them embraced Islam. Abu Abdullah said: The word Sabaa means The one who has deserted his old religion and embraced a new religion. Abul Ailya [??] said; The SAbis are a sect of people of the Scripture who recite the Book of Psalms. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5610
  6. Anas reported that Umm Sulaim gave birth to a child. She said to him: Anas; see that nothing is given to this child until he is brought to Allah Apostle ﷺ in the morning; so that he should chew some dates and touch his palate with it. I went to him in the morning and he was in the garden at that time having the mantle of Jauniya over him and he was bus in cauterising the camels which had been brought to him as spoils of war in victory over the enemy.   7. Narrated Aisha: Magic was worked on Allah Messenger ﷺ so that he began to imagine that he had done something although he had not. One day while he was with me; he invoked Allah and invoked for a long period and then said; O Aisha! Do you know that Allah has instructed me regarding the matter I asked Him about? I asked; What is that; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ? He said; Two men came to me; one of them sat near my head and the other sat near my feet. One of them asked his companion; What is the disease of this man? The other replied; He is under the effect of magic. The first one asked; Who has worked magic on him? The other replied; Labid Bin Asam; a Jew from the tribe of Bani Zuraiq. The first one asked ; With what has it been done? The other replied; With a a comb and the hair stuck to it and a skin of the pollen of a male datepalm tree. The first one asked; Where is it? The other replied; In the well of Dharwan. Then the Prophet ﷺ went along with some of his companions to that well and looked at that and there were date palms near to it. Then he returned to me and said; By Allah the water of that well was red like the infusion of Henna leaves and its date-palms were like the heads of devils I said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Did you take those materials out of the pollen skin? He said; No!
