SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1122		Narrated Ibn Abbas: regarding the Verse :- Neither say your prayer aloud; nor say it in a low tone. 17.110 This Verse was revealed while Allah Messenger ﷺ was hiding himself in Mecca; and when he raised his voice while reciting the Quran; the pagans would hear him and abuse the Quran and its Revealer and to the one who brought it. So Allah said:- Neither say your prayer aloud; nor say it in a low tone. 17.110 That is; Do not say your prayer so loudly that the pagans can hear you; nor say it in such a low tone that your companions do not hear you. But seek a middle course between those extremes ; i.e.; let your companions hear; but do not relate the Quran loudly; so that they may learn it from you. When he led his Companions in prayer he raised his voice while reciting the Quran. And when the polytheists heard that; they reviled the Quran and Him Who revealed it and him who brought it. Upon this Allah; the Exalted; said to His Apostle ﷺ : Utter not thy prayer so loudly that the polytheists may hear thy recitation and recite it not so low that it may be inaudible to your Companions. Make them hear the Quran; but do not recite it loudly and seek a middle way between these. Recite between loud and low tone. So Allah; the Mighty and Sublime; said to His Prophet ﷺ : And offer your salah prayer neither aloud that is; such that the idolators can hear your recitation and insult the Quran; nor in a low voice; so that your companions cannot hear; but follow a way between. When they both met the Prophet ﷺ together; the Prophet ﷺ said: I passed by you; Abu Bakr; when you were praying in a low voice. He replied: I made Him hear with Whom I was holding intimate converse; Messenger of Allah. He the Prophet said to Umar: I passed by you when you were praying in a loud voice. He replied: Messenger of Allah; I was awakening the drowsy and driving away the Devil. AlHasan added in his version: The Prophet ﷺ said: Raise your voice a little; Abu Bakr; and he said to Umar: Lower your voice a little.
