For those who reject (Him), there is a grievous Penalty.

But if ye are prevented (From completing it), send an offering for sacrifice, such as ye may find, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches the place of sacrifice. And if any of you is ill, or has an ailment in his scalp, (Necessitating shaving), (He should) in compensation either fast, or feed the poor, or offer sacrifice; and when ye are in peaceful conditions (again), if any one wishes to continue the 'umra on to the hajj, He must make an offering, such as he can afford, but if he cannot afford it, He should fast three days during the hajj and seven days on his return, Making ten days in all. This is for those whose household is not in (the precincts of) the Sacred Mosque. And fear Allah, and know that Allah Is strict in punishment.

If any of you doth so intentionally, the compensation is an offering, brought to the Ka'ba, of a domestic animal equivalent to the one he killed, as adjudged by two just men among you; or by way of atonement, the feeding of the indigent; or its equivalent in fasts: that he may taste of the penalty of his deed. Allah forgives what is past: for repetition Allah will exact from him the penalty. For Allah is Exalted, and Lord of Retribution.

If that is beyond your means, fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths ye have sworn. But keep to your oaths. Thus doth Allah make clear to you His signs, that ye may be grateful.

For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will, - it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.

Hind added; Abu Sufyan is a miser. Is it sinful of me to feed our children from his property? The Prophet ﷺ said; There is no blame on you if you feed them thereof in a just and reasonable manner. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3083		Narrated Abu Huraira: I used to accompany Allah Messenger ﷺ to fill my stomach; and that was when I did not eat baked bread; nor wear silk. When the month of Ramadan entered; I pronounced Zihar upon my wife to last until the end of Ramadan; fearing that I might have an encounter with her during the night; and I would continue doing that until daylight came upon me; and I would not be able to stop. One night while she was serving me; something of her became exposed for me; so I rushed myself upon her. When the morning came I went to my people to inform them about what happened to me. I said: Accompany me to the Messenger of Allah to inform him about my case. They said: No by Allah! We shall not do that; we feat that something will be revealed about us in the Quran; or the Messenger of Allah might say something about us; the disgrace of which will remain upon us. But you do and do whatever you want. He said: So I left and I went to the Messenger of Allah; and informed him of my case. He said: You are the one who did that? I said: I am the one. He said: You are the one who did that? I said: I am the one. He said: You are the one who did that? I said: I am the one; it is before you; so give me Allahs judgment; for I shall be patient with that. He said: Free a slave. He said: I struck the sides of my neck with me hands; and said: No by the One Who sent you with the Truth! I possess nothing besides it. He said: Then fast for two months I said: O Messenger of Allah! Did this occur to me other than when I was fasting? He said: Then feed sixty poor people. I said: By the One Who sent you with the Truth! We have spent these nights of ours hungry without an evening meal. He said: Go to the one with the charity from Banu Ruzaiq; tell him to give it to you; then feed a Wasq of it; on your behalf; to sixty poor people. Then help yourself and your dependants with the remainder of it. He said: I returned to my people and said: I found dejection and bad ideas with you; and I found liberalness and blessing with the Messenger of Allah. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-24900		Aisha wife of the Prophet ﷺ and Umm Salamah said Abu Hudaifah Bin Utbah Bin Rabiah Bin Abd Shams adopted Salim as his son and married him to his niece Hind; daughter of AlWalid Bin Utbah Bin Rabiah. He Salim was the freed slave of a woman from the Ansar the Helpers as the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ adopted Zaid as his son. In pre Islamic days when anyone adopted a man as his son; the people called him by his name and he was given a share from his inheritance. Allaah; the Exalted; revealed about this matter Call them by the name of their fathers; that is juster in the sight of Allaah. And if ye know not their fathers; then they are your brethren in the faith and your clients. They were then called by their names of their fathers. A man; whose father was not known; remained under the protection of someone and considered brother in faith. Sahlah daughter of Suhail Bin Amr AlQuraishi then came and said Apostle of Allaah ﷺ ; we used to consider Salim our son. He dwelled with me and Abu Hudhaifah in the same house; and he saw me in the short clothes; but Allaah the Exalted; has revealed about them what you know; then what is your opinion about him? The Prophet ﷺ said give him your breast feed. She gave him five breast feeds. He then became like her foster son. Hence; Aisha may Allaah be pleased with her used to ask the daughters of her sisters and the daughters of her brethren to give him breast feed five times; whom Aisha wanted to see and who wanted to visit her. Though he might be of age; he then visited her. But Umm Salamah and all other wives of the Prophet ﷺ refused to allow anyone to visit them on the basis of such breast feeding unless one was given breast feed during infancy. They told Aisha by Allaah we do not know whether that was a special concession granted by the Prophet ﷺ to Salim exclusive of the people. So I made my wife like my mother back to me till the end of Ramadan. But one night when she was waiting upon me; something of her was revealed. Suddenly I jumped upon her. When the morning came I went to my people and informed them about this matter. I said: Go along with me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said: No; by Allah. So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of the matter. He said: Have you really committed it; Salamah? I said: I committed it twice; Messenger of Allah. I am content with the Commandment of Allah; the Exalted; so take a decision about me according to what Allah has shown you. He said: Free a slave. I said: By Him Who sent you with truth; I do not possess a neck other than this: and I struck the surface of my neck. He said: Then fast two consecutive months. I said: Whatever I suffered is due to fasting. He said: Feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates. I said: By Him Who sent you with truth; we passed the night hungry; there was no food in our house. He said: Then go to the collector of sadaqah of Banu Zurayq; he must give it to you. Then feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates; and you and your family eat the remaining dates. Then I came back to my people; and said to them : I found with you poverty and bad opinion; and I found with the Prophet ﷺ prosperity and good opinion. He has commanded me to give alms to you. The narrator Nasr reported the rest of the tradition completely. The narrator; Ibn AlMuthanna; narrated the story of saying prayer facing in the direction of Jerusalem. He said: The third stage is that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Medina and prayed; i.e. facing Jerusalem; for thirteen months. Then Allah; the Exalted; revealed the verse: We have seen thee turning thy face to Heaven for guidance; O Muhammad. And now verily We shall make thee turn in prayer toward a qiblah which is dear to thee. So turn thy face toward the Inviolable Place of Worship; and ye O Muslims ; wherever ye may be; turn your face when ye pray toward it ii.144. And Allah; the Reverend and the Majestic; turned them towards the Kabah. He the narrator completed his tradition. The narrator; Nasr; mentioned the name of the person who had the dream; saying: And Abdullah Ibn Zayd; a man from the Ansar; came. The same version reads: And he turned his face towards the qiblah and said: Allah is most great; Allah is most great; I testify that there is no god but Allah; I testify that there is no god but Allah; I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; come to prayer he pronounced it twice ; come to salvation he pronounced it twice ; Allah is Most Great; Allah is most great. He then paused for a while; and then got up and pronounced in a similar way; except that after the phrase Come to salvation he added. The time for prayer has come; the time for prayer has come. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Teach it to Bilal; then pronounce the adhan call to prayer with the same words. As regards fasting; he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast for three days every month; and would fast on the tenth of Muharram. Then Allah; the Exalted; revealed the verse:.......Fasting was prescribed for those before you; that ye may ward off evil......and for those who can afford it there is a ransom: the feeding of a man in need ii.183-84. If someone wished to keep the fast; he would keep the fast; if someone wished to abandon the fast; he would feed an indigent every day; it would do for him. But this was changed. Allah; the Exalted; revealed: The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran.......... let him fast the same number of other days ii.185. Hence the fast was prescribed for the one who was present in the month of Ramadan and the traveller was required to atone for them ; feeding the indigent was prescribed for the old man and woman who were unable to fast. MuwataMalik-017-001-34824		Malik related to me that he had heard that Abdullah Ibn Umar was asked whether a slave could be bought on the specific condition that it was to be used to fulfil the obligation of freeing a slave; and he said; No. Malik said; That is the best of what I have heard on the obligation of freeing slaves. Someone who has to set a slave free because of an obligation on him; may not buy one on the condition that he sets it free because if he does that; whatever he buys is not completely a slave because he has reduced its price by the condition he has made of setting it free. Malik added; There is no harm; however; in someone buying a person expressly to set him free. Malik said; The best of what I have heard on the obligation of freeing slaves is that it is not permitted to free a christian or a jew to fulfil it; and one does not free a mukatab or a mudabbar or an umm walad or a slave to be freed after a certain number of years; or a blind person. There is no harm in freeing a christian; jew; or magian voluntarily; because Allah; the Blessed; the Exalted; said in His Book; either as a favour then or by ransom; Surat 47 ayat 4 The favour is setting free. Malik said; As for obligations of freeing slaves which Allah has mentioned in the Book; one only frees a mumin slave for them. Malik said; It is like that in feeding poor people for kaffara. MuwataMalik-017-001-35820		Malik said; Allah; the Blessed and Exalted; says; O you who trust; do not kill game while you are in ihram. Whoever of you kills game intentionally has to pay a forfeit commensurate with what he has killed in cattle which two men from among you shall judge; a sacrificial animal which reaches the Kaba; or else he makes a kaffara of either feeding poor people or the equivalent of that in fasting; so that he may taste the consequences of what he has done. Surat 5 ayat 95. Malik said; Someone who hunts game when he is not in ihram and then kills it while he is in ihram is in the same position as someone who buys game while he is in ihram and then kills it. Allah has forbidden killing it; and so a man who does so has to pay a forfeit for it. The position that we go by in this matter is that a forfeit is assessed for anyone who kills game while he is in ihram. Yahya said that Malik said; The best that I have heard about someone who kills game and is assessed for it is that the game which he has killed is assessed and its value in food is estimated and with that food he feeds each poor man a mudd; or fasts a day in place of each mudd. The number of poor men is considered; and if it is ten then he fasts ten days; and if it is twenty he fasts twenty days; according to how many people there are to be fed; even if there are more than sixty. Malik said; I have heard that a forfeit is assessed for someone who kills game in the Haram while he is not in ihram in the same way that it is assessed for some one who kills game in the Haram while he is in ihram.
