SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1220Narrated Jabir Bin Abdullah: We were in the company of Allah Messenger ﷺ and we assumed the state of Ihram of Hajj and arrived at Mecca on the fourth of Dhu AlHijja. The Prophet ﷺ ordered us to perform the Tawaf around the Kaba and Sai between AlSafa and AlMarwa and use our lhram just for Umra; and finish the state of Ihram unless we had our Hadi with us. None of us had the Hadi with him except the Prophet ﷺ and Talha. Ali came from Yemen and brought the Hadi with him. Ali said; I had assumed the state of Ihram with the same intention as that with which Allah Messenger ﷺ had assumed it. The people said; How can we proceed to Mina and our male organs are dribbling? Allah Messenger ﷺ said; If I had formerly known what I came to know latterly; I would not have brought the Hadi; and had there been no Hadi with me; I would have finished my Ihram. Suraqa bin Malik met the Prophet ﷺ while he was throwing pebbles at the Jamrat AlAqaba; and asked; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Is this permitted for us only? The Prophet ﷺ replied. No; it is forever Aisha had arrived at Mecca while she was menstruating; therefore the Prophet ﷺ ordered her to perform all the ceremonies of Hajj except the Tawaf around the Kaba; and not to perform her prayers unless and until she became clean. When they encamped at AlBatha; Aisha said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! You are proceeding after performing both Hajj and Umra while I am proceeding with Hajj only? SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3942Narrated Adi Bin Hatim: While I was in the city of the Prophet; a man came and complained to him the Prophet; of destitution and poverty. Then another man came and complained of robbery by highwaymen. The Prophet said; Adi! Have you been to AlHira? I said; I havent been to it; but I was informed about it. He said; If you should live for a long time; you will certainly see that a lady in a Howdah traveling from AlHira will safely reach Mecca and perform the Tawaf of the Kaba; fearing none but Allah. I said to myself; What will happen to the robbers of the tribe of Tai who have spread evil through out the country? The Prophet ﷺ further said. If you should live long; the treasures of Khosrau will be opened and taken as spoils. I asked; You mean Khosrau; son of Hurmuz? He said; Khosrau; son of Hurmuz; and if you should live long; you will see that one will carry a handful of gold or silver and go out looking for a person to accept it from him; but will find none to accept it from him. And any of you; when meeting Allah; will meet Him without needing an interpreter between him and Allah to interpret for him; and Allah will say to him: Didnt I send a messenger to teach you? He will say: Yes. Allah will say: Didnt I give you wealth and do you favors? He will say: Yes. Then he will look to his right and see nothing but Hell; and look to his left and see nothing but Hell. Adi further said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying; Save yourself from the Hell Fire even with half a date to be given in charity and if you do not find a half date; then with a good pleasant word. Adi added: later on I saw a lady in a Howdah traveling from AlHira till she performed the Tawaf of the Kaba; fearing none but Allah. And I was one of those who opened conquered the treasures of Khosrau; son of Hurmuz. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3976Narrated Abdullah Bin Masud: Saad Bin Muadh came to Mecca with the intention of performing Umra; and stayed at the house of Umaiya Bin Khalaf Abi Safwan; for Umaiya himself used to stay at Saad house when he passed by Medina on his way to Sham. Umaiya said to Sad; Will you wait till midday when the people are at their homes ; then you may go and perform the Tawaf round the Kaba? So; while Saad was going around the Kaba; Abu Jahl came and asked; Who is that who is performing Tawaf? Saad replied; I am Sad. Abu Jahl said; Are you circumambulating the Kaba safely although you have given refuge to Muhammad and his companions? Saad said; Yes; and they started quarreling. Umaiya said to Sad; Dont shout at Abi AlHakam i.e. Abu Jahl ; for he is chief of the valley of Mecca. Saad then said to Abu Jahl. By Allah; if you prevent me from performing the Tawaf of the Kaba; I will spoil your trade with Sham. Umaiya kept on saying to Sad; Dont raise your voice. and kept on taking hold of him. Saad became furious and said; to Umaiya ; Be away from me; for I have heard Muhammad saying that he will kill you. Umaiiya said; Will he kill me? Saad said; Yes;. Umaiya said; By Allah! When Muhammad says a thing; he never tells a lie. Umaiya went to his wife and said to her; Do you know what my brother from Yathrib i.e. Medina has said to me? She said; What has he said? He said; He claims that he has heard Muhammad claiming that he will kill me. She said; By Allah! Muhammad never tells a lie. So when the infidels started to proceed for Badr Battle and declared war against the Muslims ; his wife said to him; Dont you remember what your brother from Yathrib told you? Umaiya decided not to go but Abu Jahl said to him; You are from the nobles of the valley of Mecca ; so you should accompany us for a day or two. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5554Narrated Nafi: That Ubaidullah Bin Abdullah and Salim Bin Abdullah informed him that they told Ibn Umar when Ibn AlZubair was attacked by the army; saying There is no harm for you if you did not perform Hajj this year. We are afraid that you may be prevented from reaching the Kaba. Ibn Umar said We set out with Allah Messenger ﷺ and the non-believers of Quraish prevented us from reaching the Kaba; and so the Prophet ﷺ slaughtered his Hadi and got his head shaved. Ibn Umar added; I make you witnesses that I have made Umra obligatory for me. And; Allah willing; I will go and then if the way to Kaba is clear; I will perform the Tawaf; but if I am prevented from going to the Kaba then I will do the same as the Prophet ﷺ did while I was in his company. Ibn Umar then assumed Ihram for Umra from Dhu AlHulaifa and proceeded for a while and said; The conditions of Umra and Hajj are similar and I make you witnesses that I have made Umra and Hajj obligatory for myself. So; he did not finish the Ihram till the Day Of AlNahr slaughtering came; and he slaughtered his Hadi. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5580Narrated Jabir Bin Abdullah: The Prophet ﷺ and his companions assumed Ihram for Hajj and none except the Prophet ﷺ and Talha had the Hadi with them. Ali had come from Yemen and he had the Hadi with him. He Ali said; I have assumed Ihram with an intention like that of Allah Messenger ﷺ has assumed it. The Prophet ﷺ ordered his companions to intend the Ihram with which they had come for Umra; to perform the Tawaf of the Kaba and between Safa and Marwa ; to get their hair cut short and then to finish their Ihram with the exception of those who had the Hadi with them. They asked; Shall we go to Mina and the private organs of some of us are dribbling if we finish Ihram and have sexual relations with our wives ? The Prophet heard that and said; Had I known what I know now; I would not have brought the Hadi. If I did not have the Hadi with me I would have finished my Ihram. Aisha got her menses and performed all the ceremonies of Hajj except the Tawaf. So when she became clean from her menses; and she had performed the Tawaf of the Kaba; she said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! You people are returning with both Hajj and Umra and I am returning only with Hajj! So; he ordered Abdulrahman Bin Abu Bakr to go with her to AlTanim. Thus she performed Umra after the Hajj in the month of Dhi AlHijja. Suraqa Bin Malik Bin Jusham met the Prophet ﷺ at AlAqaba Jamrat AlAqaba while the latter was stoning it and said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Is this permissible only for you? SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5583Narrated Aisha: We set out assuming the Ihram for Hajj in the months of Hajj towards the sacred precincts of Hajj. We dismounted at Sarif and the Prophet ﷺ said to his companions; Whoever has not got the Hadi with him and likes to make it as Umra; he should do it; but he who has got the Hadi with him should not do it. The Prophet ﷺ and some of his wealthy companions had the Hadi with them; so they did not finish Ihram after performing the Umra. The Prophet ﷺ came to me while I was weeping. He asked me the reason for it. I replied; I have heard of what you have said to your companions and I cannot do the Umra. He asked me; What is the matter with you? I replied; I am not praying. He said; There is no harm in it as you are one of the daughters of Adam and the same is written for you as for others. So; you should perform Hajj and I hope that Allah will enable you to perform the Umra as well. So; I carried on till we departed from Mina and halted at AlMahassab. The Prophet ﷺ called Abdulrahman and said; Go out of the sanctuary with your sister and let her assume Ihram for Umra; and after both of you have finished the Tawaf I will be waiting for you at this place. We came back at midnight and the Prophet ﷺ asked us; Have you finished? I replied in the affirmative. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5585Narrated Hisham Ibn Urwa from his father who said: While I was a youngster; I asked Aisha the wife of the Prophet. What about the meaning of the Statement of Allah; Verily! the mountains AlSafa and AlMarwa; are among the symbols of Allah. So; it is not harmful if those who perform Hajj or Umra of the House Kaba at Mecca to perform the going Tawaf between them? 2.158 I understand from that that there is no harm if somebody does not perform the Tawaf between them. Aisha replied; No; for if it were as you are saying; then the recitation would have been like this: It is not harmful not to perform Tawaf between them. This verse was revealed in connection with the Ansar who used to assume the Ihram for the idol Manat which was put beside a place called Qudaid and those people thought it not right to perform the Tawaf of AlSafa and AlMarwa. When Islam came; they asked Allah Messenger ﷺ about that; and Allah revealed:- Verily! the mountains AlSafa and AlMarwa Are among the symbols of Allah. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5587Narrated Amr Bin Dinar: We asked Ibn Umar whether a man who had performed the Tawaf of the Kaba but had not performed the Tawaf between AlSafa and AlMarwa yet; was permitted to have sexual relation with his wife. He replied; The Prophet ﷺ arrived at Mecca and circumambulated the Kaba seven times and then offered a two rakat prayer behind Maqam-lbrahim and then performed the going Tawaf between AlSafa and AlMarwa seven times and verily; in Allah Messenger ﷺ you have a good example. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5588Narrated Abu Mousa AlAshari: I came to the Prophet ﷺ at AlBatha while his camel was kneeling down and he asked me; Have you intended to perform the Hajj? SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5682Narrated Abdullah Bin Abbas: The Prophet ﷺ with his companions started from Medina after combing and oiling his hair and putting on two sheets of lhram upper body cover and waist cover. He did not forbid anyone to wear any kind of sheets except the ones colored with saffron because they may leave the scent on the skin. And so in the early morning; the Prophet ﷺ mounted his Mount while in Dhu AlHulaifa and set out till they reached Baida; where he and his companions recited Talbiya; and then they did the ceremony of Taqlid which means to put the colored garlands around the necks of the Budn camels for sacrifice. And all that happened on the 25th of Dh AlQada. And when he reached Mecca on the 4th of Dhu AlHijja he performed the Tawaf round the Kaba and performed the Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. And as he had a Badana and had garlanded it; he did not finish his Ihram. He proceeded towards the highest places of Mecca near AlHujun and he was assuming the Ihram for Hajj and did not go near the Kaba after he performed Tawaf round it till he returned from Arafat. Then he ordered his companions to perform the Tawaf round the Kaba and then the Tawaf of Safa and Marwa; and to cut short the hair of their heads and to finish their Ihram. And that was only for those people who had not garlanded Budn. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5693Narrated Aisha: the wife of the Prophet ﷺ We set out with the Prophet ﷺ in his last Hajj and we assumed Ihram for Umra. The Prophet ﷺ then said; Whoever has the Hadi with him should assume Ihram for Hajj along with Umra and should not finish the Ihram till he finishes both. I was menstruating when I reached Mecca; and so I neither did Tawaf round the Kaba nor Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. I complained about that to the Prophet ﷺ on which he replied; Undo and comb your head hair; and assume Ihram for Hajj only and leave the Umra. So; I did so. When we had performed the Hajj; the Prophet sent me with my brother Abdulrahman Bin Abu Bakr to Tanim. So I performed the Umra. The Prophet ﷺ said to me; This Umra is instead of your missed one. Those who had assumed Ihram for Umra Hajj-atTamattu performed Tawaf round the Kaba and between Safa and Marwa and then finished their Ihram. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5698Narrated AlAswad: Aisha said; We went out with the Prophet from Medina with the intention of performing Hajj only and when we reached Mecca we performed Tawaf round the Kaba and then the Prophet ﷺ ordered those who had not driven the Hadi along with them to finish their Ihram. So the people who had not driven the Hadi along with them finished their Ihram. The Prophet wives; too; had not driven the Hadi with them; so they too; finished their Ihram. Aisha added; I got my menses and could not perform Tawaf round the Kaba. So when it was the night of Hasba i.e. when we stopped at AlMuhassab ; I said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Everyone is returning after performing Hajj and Umra but I am returning after performing Hajj only. He said; Didnt you perform Tawaf round the Kaba the night we reached Mecca? I replied in the negative. He said; Go with your brother to Tanim and assume the Ihram for Umra; and after performing it come back to such and such a place. On that Safiya said; I feel that I will detain you all. The Prophet ﷺ said; O Aqra Halqa! Didnt you perform Tawaf of the Kaba on the day of sacrifice? i.e. Tawaf Alifada Safiya replied in the affirmative. He said; to Safiya. There is no harm for you to proceed on with us. SunanAlTermithi-017-001-8407Ali Bin Abi Talib; may Allah be pleased with him; narrated: The Messenger of Allah stopped at Arafat and said: This is Arafat and it is a place of standing. And all of Arafat is a place for standing. Then he departed when the sun had set and took Usamah Bin Zaid as a companion rider; and he was motioning with his hand as was his custom; and the people were striking their camels on the right and the left to try and catch them; so he said: O you people! Be calmm. Then he came to Jama and performed the two Prayer there combined. When the morning came; he went to Quzah and stood there and said: This is Quzah; and it is a place of standing; and all of Jama is a place for standing. Then he departed until he arrived at Wadi Muhassir. Then he stuck his camel and she trotted until he passed the valley. Then he stopped and took AlFadl as a companion rider and went to the Jamrah to stone it. Then he went to AlManhar and said: This is AlManhar; and all of Mina is a place for sacrifice. A young girl from Khatham came to ask him for a verdict; she said: Indeed my father is an elderly man who has lived until Allah has made Hajj obligatory; so would he be rewarded if I perform Hajj for him? He said: Perform Hajj for your father. He said: And he turned the neck of AlFadl. So AlAbbas said: O Messenger of Allah! Why did you turn the neck of your cousin? He said: I saw a young man and a young woman; and they were not safe from Shaitan. A man came to him and said; O Messenger of Allah! I performed Tawaf AlIfadah before shaving. He said: In the messenger of Allah you have a good example. I am going to do what the Messenger of Allah did. I bear witness to you that I have resolved to perform Umrah. Then he set out; and when he was in Zahir AlBaida; he said: Hajj and Umrah are the same thing; I bear witness to you that I have resolved to perform Hajj with my Umrah. And he brought along a Hadi sacrificial animal that he had bought in Qudaid. Then he set out and entered Ihram for them both. When he came to Makkah he circumambulated the House and did sai between AlSafa and AlMarwah. Then he did not do any thing more than that; and he did not offer a sacrifice; or shave his head; or cut his hair; he remained in Ihram until the Day of Sacrifice. Then he slaughtered his Hadi and shaved his head; and he thought that he had completed the Tawaf of Hajj and Umrah in the first Tawaf. MuwataMalik-017-001-35783Yahya related to me from Malik; from Hisham Ibn Urwa; that Abdullah Ibn AlZubair stayed in Makka for nine years. He would go into ihram for hajj at the beginning of Dhu AlHijja; and Urwa Ibn AlZubayr; who was with him; would do likewise. Yahya said that Malik said; The people of Makka and whoever else is living there besides them should go into ihram for hajj if they are in Makka; and anyone that is living in the centre of Makka and is not one of the people of Makka should not leave the Haram. Yahya said that Malik said; Someone who goes into ihram for hajj in Makka should delay tawaf of the House and the say between Safa and Marwa until he has come back from Mina; which is what Abdullah Ibn Umar used to do. Malik was asked what the people of Madina; or anybody else; should do about tawaf if they went into ihram in Makka at the beginning of Dhu AlHijja; and he said; They should delay the obligatory tawaf; which is the one they combine with the say between Safa and Marwa; but they can do whatever other tawaf they want to; and they should pray two rakas every time they complete seven tawafs; which is what the companions of the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; did when they had gone into ihram to do hajj. They delayed the tawaf of the House and the say between Safa and Marwa until they had come back from Mina. Abdullah Ibn Umar also did this; going into ihram for hajj in Makka at the beginning of Dhu AlHijja; and then delaying tawaf of theHouse and the say between Safa and Marwa until he had come back from Mina. MuwataMalik-017-001-35801Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Uthman Ibn Affan would sometimes never get down from the animal he was riding on when he was doing umra; until he had returned. Malik said; Umra is a sunna; and we do not know of any muslim who has ever said that it is permissible not to do it. Malik said; I do not think that anyone can do more than one umra in any one year. Malik said that someone doing umra who had sexual intercourse with his wife had to sacrifice an animal and do a second umra; which he had to begin when he had finished the one that he had spoiled. He should go into ihram at the same place where he went into ihram for the umra which he had spoiled; except if he had entered into ihram at a place further away than his miqat. This was because he only had to go into ihram from his miqat. Malik said; Someone who entered Makka to do umra; and does tawaf of the House and say between Safa and Marwa while he is junub; or not in Ablution; and afterwards has intercourse with his wife; and then remembers; should do ghusl; or Ablution; and then go back and do tawaf around the House and say between Safa and Marwa and do another umra and sacrifice an animal. A woman should do the same if her husband has intercourse with her while she is in ihram. Malik said; As for beginning umra at AlTanim; it is not the only alternative. But afterwards; he reconsidered his position and said; It is the same either way. After that he turned to his companions and said; It is the same either way. I call you to witness that I have decided in favour of hajj and umra together. Malik said; This is what we go by if someone is hindered by an enemy; as the Prophet; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; and his companions were. MuwataMalik-017-001-35838Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya Ibn Said from Sulayman Ibn Yasar that Said Ibn Huzaba AlMakhzumi was thrown off his mount while he was in ihram on the road to Makka. He asked after the person in charge of the relay station where he was injured and he found Abdullah Ibn Umar; Abdullah Ibn AlZubair and Marwan Ibn AlHakam there. He told them what had happened to him and all of them said that he should take whatever medicine he had to take and pay compensation for it. Then; when he got better again; he should do umra and come out of his ihram; after which he had to do hajj another year and to offer whatever sacrificial animal he was able to in the future. Malik said; This is what we do here in Madina if someone is detained by something other than an enemy. And when Abu Ayoub AlAnsari and Habbar Ibn AlAswad came to the day of the sacrifice and had missed the hajj; Umar Ibn AlKhattab told them to come out of ihram by doing umra and then to go home free of ihram and do hajj some time in the future and to sacrifice an animal; or; if they could not find one; to fast three days during the hajj and seven days after they had returned to their families. Malik said; Anyone who is detained from doing hajj after he has gone into ihram; whether by illness or otherwise; or by an error in calculating the month or because the new moon is concealed from him is in the same position as some one who is hindered from doing the hajj and must do the same as he does. Yahya said that Malik was asked about the situation of someone from Makka who went into ihram for hajj and then broke a bone or had severe stomach pain; or of a woman who was in labour; and he said; Someone to whom this happens is in the same situation as one who is hindered from doing the hajj; and he must do the same as people from outlying regions do when they are hindered from doing the hajj. Malik said; about someone who arrived in the months of the hajj with the intention of doing umra; and completed his umra and went into ihram in Makka to do hajj; and then broke a bone or something else happened to him which stopped him from being present at Arafa with everybody else; I think that he should stay where he is until he is better and then go outside the area of the Haram; and then return to Makka and do tawaf of the House and say between Safa and Marwa; and then leave ihram. He must then do hajj again another year and offer a sacrificial animal. Malik said; about someone who left ihram in Makka; and then did tawaf of the House and say between Safa and Marwa; and then fell ill and was unable to be present with everybody at Arafa; If the hajj passes someone by he should; if he can; go out of the area of the Haram and then come back in again to do umra and do tawaf of the House and say between Safa and Marwa; because he had not intended his initial tawaf to be for an umra; and so for this reason he does it again. He must do the next hajj and offer a sacrificial animal. If he is not one of the people of Makka; and something happens to him which stops him from doing the hajj; but he does tawaf of the House and say between Safa and Marwa; he should come out of ihram by doing an umra and then do tawaf of the House a second time; and say between Safa and Marwa; because his initial tawaf and say were intended for the hajj. MuwataMalik-017-001-35851Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham Ibn Urwa that his father would never do two sets of seven tawafs together without praying between them. After every seven tawafs he would pray two rakas; sometimes at the maqam of Ibrahim; and sometimes elsewhere. Malik was asked whether a man doing voluntary tawaf could; to make it easier on himself; join two or more sets of seven circuits and then pray whatever he owed for those sets of seven; and he said; He should not do that. The sunna is that he does two rakasafter every seven circuits. Malik said; about someone who began doing tawaf and then forgot how many he had done and did eightor nine circuits; He should stop when he knows that he has done more than the right number and then pray two rakas;and he should not count the ones that he has done in excess. Neither should he build on the nine that he has done and then pray the rakas for the two sets of seven circuits together; because the sunna is that you pray two rakas after every seven circuits. Malik said that someone who was in doubt about his tawaf after he had prayed the two rakas of tawaf should go back and complete his tawaf until he was certain of how much he had done. He should then repeat the two rakas; because prayer when doing tawaf was only valid after completing seven circuits. If some one breaks his Ablution either while he is doing tawaf; or when he has finished tawaf but before he has prayed the two rakas of tawaf; he should do Ablution and begin the tawaf and the two rakas afresh. Malik said; There is no harm in someone doing a single tawaf after subh or after asr; not to do more than one group of seven circuits; and then as long as he delays the two rakas until after the sun has risen; as Umar Ibn AlKhattab did; or he delays them until after the sun has set if it is after asr. If Urwa saw people doing circuits on riding beasts he would tell them in very strong terms not to do so; and they would pretend to be ill; out of awe of him. Hisham added; He used to say to us about them These are unsuccessful and have lost. Malik said; Someone who forgets say between Safa and Marwa in an umra; and does not remember until he is far from Makka; should return and do say. If; in the meantime; he has had intercourse with a woman; he should return and do say between Safa and Marwa so as to complete what remains of that umra; and then after that he has to do another umra and offer a sacrificial animal. Malik was asked about someone who met another man when doing say between Safa and Marwa and stopped to talk with him; and he said; I do not like anyone to do that. Malik said; If anyone forgets some of his tawaf or is uncertain about it and remembers only when he is doing say between Safa and Marwa; he should stop the say and complete his tawaf of the House apart from that about which he is certain. Malik was asked about a man who forgot the tawaf Alifada until he had left Makka and returned to his community and he said; I think that he should go back and do the tawaf Alifada; as long as he has not had sexual relations with women. If; however; he has had sexual relations with women; then he should not only return and do the tawaf Alifada; but he should also do an umra and sacrifice an animal. MuwataMalik-017-001-35928Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdulrahman Ibn AlQasim that his father used to go into Makka by night when he was doing umra and do tawaf of the House and say between Safa and Marwa and delay the shaving until the morning; but he would not go back to the House and do tawaf again until he had shaved his head. Abdulrahman added; Sometimes he would enter the Masjid and do the witr prayer there without actually going near the House. Malik said; AlTafath is shaving the head; putting on normal clothes and things of that nature. Yahya said that Malik was asked whether a man who forgot to shave his head at Mina during the hajj could shave in Makka; and he said; That is permissible; but I prefer the shaving to be done at Mina. Malik said; What we are all agreed upon here in Madina is that no-one should shave his head or cut his hair until he has killed his sacrificial animal; if he has one; and things that are haram for him do not become halal for him until he leaves ihram at Mina on the day of sacrifice.
