Then he called upon his translator and said to him. Tell them i.e. Abu Sufyan companions that I am going to ask him i.e. Abu Sufyan regarding that man who claims to be a prophet. So; if he tell me a lie; they should contradict him instantly. By Allah; had I not been afraid that my companions would consider me a liar; I would have told lies. Heraclius then said to his translator; Ask him: What is his i.e. the Prophets family status amongst you? I said; He belongs to a noble family amongst us. Heraclius said; Was any of his ancestors a king? I said; No. He said; Did you ever accuse him of telling lies before his saying what he has said? I said; No. He said; Do the nobles follow him or the poor people? I said; It is the poor who followed him. He said; Is the number of his follower increasing or decreasing? I said; The are increasing. He said; Does anyone renounce his religion i.e. Islam after embracing it; being displeased with it? I said; No. He said; Did you fight with him? I replied; Yes. He said; How was your fighting with him? I said; The fighting between us was undecided and victory was shared by him and us by turns. He inflicts casualties upon us and we inflict casualties upon him. He said; Did he ever betray? I said; No; but now we are away from him in this truce and we do not know what he will do in it Abu Sufyan added; By Allah; I was not able to insert in my speech a word against him except that. Heraclius said; Did anybody else amongst you ever claimed the same i.e. Islam before him? I said; No. Then Heraclius told his translator to tell me i.e. Abu Sufyan ; I asked you about his family status amongst you; and you told me that he comes from a noble family amongst you Verily; all Apostles come from the noblest family among their people. Then I asked you whether any of his ancestors was a king; and you denied that. Thereupon I thought that had one of his fore-fathers been a king; I would have said that he i.e. Muhammad was seeking to rule the kingdom of his fore-fathers. Then I asked you regarding his followers; whether they were the noble or the poor among the people; and you said that they were only the poor who follow him. In fact; such are the followers of the Apostles. Then I asked you whether you have ever accused him of telling lies before saying what he said; and your reply was in the negative. Therefore; I took for granted that a man who did not tell a lie about others; could ever tell a lie about Allah. Then I asked you whether anyone of his followers had renounced his religion i.e. Islam after embracing it; being displeased with it; and you denied that. And such is Faith when it mixes with the cheerfulness of the hearts. Then I asked you whether his followers were increasing or decreasing. You claimed that they were increasing. That is the way of true faith till it is complete. Then I asked you whether you had ever fought with him; and you claimed that you had fought with him and the battle between you and him was undecided and the victory was shared by you and him in turns; he inflicted casual ties upon you and you inflicted casualties upon them. Such is the case with the Apostles; they are out to test and the final victory is for them. Then I asked you whether he had ever betrayed; you claimed that he had never betrayed. I need; Apostles never betray. Then I asked you whether anyone had said this statement before him; and you denied that. Thereupon I thought if somebody had said that statement before him; then I would have said that he was but a man copying some sayings said before him. Abu Safyan said; Heraclius then asked me; What does he order you to do? I said; He orders us to offer prayers and to pay Zakat and to keep good relationship with the Kith and kin and to be chaste. Then Heraclius said; If whatever you have said; is true; he is really a prophet; and I knew that he i.e. the Prophet ﷺ was going to appear; but I never thought that he would be from amongst you. If I were certain that I can reach him; I would like to meet him and if I were with him; I would wash his feet; and his kingdom will expand surely to what is under my feet. Then Heraclius asked for the letter of Allah Messenger ﷺ and read it wherein was written: In the Name of Allah; the Most Beneficent; the Most Merciful. This letter is from Muhammad; Apostle of Allah; to Heraclius; the sovereign of Byzantine........ ﷺ who follows the Right Path. Now then; I call you to embrace Islam. Embrace Islam and you will be saved from Allah Punishment ; embrace Islam; and Allah will give you a double reward; but if you reject this; you will be responsible for the sins of all the people of your kingdom Allah Statement :-O the people of the Scripture Jews and Christians ! Come to a word common to you and us that we worship None but Allah....bear witness that we are Muslims. 3.64 When he finished reading the letter; voices grew louder near him and there was a great hue and cry; and we were ordered to go out. Abu Sufyan added; While coming out; I said to my companions; The situation of Ibn Abu Kabsha i.e. Muhammad has become strong; even the king of Banu Al14 Asfar is afraid of him. So I continued to believe that Allah Messenger ﷺ would be victorious; till Allah made me embrace Islam. AlZuhri said; Heraclius then invited all the chiefs of the Byzantines and had them assembled in his house and said; O group of Byzantines! Do you wish to have a permanent success and guidance and that your kingdom should remain with you? Immediately after hearing that ; they rushed towards the gate like onagers; but they found them closed. Heraclius then said; Bring them back to me. So he called them and said; I just wanted to test the strength of your adherence to your religion. Now I have observed of you that which I like. Then the people fell in prostration before him and became pleased with him. See Hadith No. 6;Vol 1 SahihAlBukhari-017-001-6867
  2. Narrated Ibn Abbas: For the whole year I had the desire to ask Umar Bin AlKhattab regarding the explanation of a Verse in Surat AlTahrim but I could not ask him because I respected him very much. When he went to perform the Hajj; I too went along with him. On our return; while we were still on the way home. Umar went Aasi de to answer the call of nature by the Arak trees. I waited till he finished and then I proceeded with him and asked him. O chief of the Believers! Who were the two wives of the Prophet ﷺ who aided one another against him? He said; They were Hafsa and Aisha. Then I said to him; By Allah; I wanted to ask you about this a year ago; but I could not do so owing to my respect for you. Umar said; Do not refrain from asking me. If you think that I have knowledge about a certain matter ; ask me; and if I know something about it ; I will tell you. Then Umar added; By Allah; in the Pre-lslamic Period of Ignorance we did not pay attention to women until Allah revealed regarding them what He revealed regarding them and assigned for them what He has assigned. Once while I was thinking over a certain matter; my wife said; I recommend that you do so-and-so. I said to her; What have you got to do with the is matter? Why do you poke your nose in a matter which I want to see fulfilled.? She said; How strange you are; O son of AlKhattab! You dont want to be argued with whereas your daughter; Hafsa surely; argues with Allah Messenger ﷺ so much that he remains angry for a full day! Umar then reported; how he at once put on his outer garment and went to Hafsa and said to her; O my daughter! Do you argue with Allah Messenger ﷺ so that he remains angry the whole day? H. afsa said; By Allah; we argue with him. Umar said; Know that I warn you of Allah punishment and the anger of Allah Messenger ﷺ... O my daughter! Dont be betrayed by the one who is proud of her beauty because of the love of Allah Messenger ﷺ for her i.e. Aisha. Umar addled; Then I went out to Umm Salamah house who was one of my relatives; and I talked to her. She said; O son of AlKhattab! It is rather astonishing that you interfere in everything; you even want to interfere between Allah Apostle and his wives! By Allah; by her talk she influenced me so much that I lost some of my anger. I left her and went home. At that time I had a friend from the Ansar who used to bring news from the Prophet in case of my absence; and I used to bring him the news if he was absent. In those days we were afraid of one of the kings of Ghassan tribe. We heard that he intended to move and attack us; so fear filled our hearts because of that. One day my Ansari friend unexpectedly knocked at my door; and said; Open Open! I said; Has the king of Ghassan come? He said; No; but something worse; Allah Messenger ﷺ has isolated himself from his wives. I said; Let the nose of Aisha and Hafsa be stuck to dust i.e. humiliated ! Then I put on my clothes and went to Allah Messenger ﷺ residence; and behold; he was staying in an upper room of his to which he ascended by a ladder; and a black slave of Allah Messenger ﷺ was sitting on the first step. I said to him; Say to the Prophet ﷺ Umar Bin AlKhattab is here. Then the Prophet ﷺ admitted me and I narrated the story to Allah Messenger ﷺ. When I reached the story of Umm Salamah ; Allah Messenger ﷺ smiled while he was lying on a mat made of palm tree leaves with nothing between him and the mat. Underneath his head there was a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibres; and leaves of a saut tree were piled at his feet; and above his head hung a few water skins. On seeing the marks of the mat imprinted on his side; I wept. He said. Why are you weeping? I replied; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Caesar and Khosrau are leading the life i.e. Luxurious life while you; Allah Messenger ﷺ though you are; is living in destitute. The Prophet ﷺ then replied. Wont you be satisfied that they enjoy this world and we the Hereafter? SahihAlBukhari-017-001-7224
  3. Narrated Ibn Abbas: that a group of people from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat waiting for him. He said: Then he came out; such that when he came close to them; he heard them talking; and he heard what they were saying. So some of them said: It amazing that Allah; the Mighty and Sublime; has taken a Khalil close friend from His creation. He took Ibrahim as a Khalil. And some of them said: That is not more amazing than speaking to Mousa; He spoke to him with real speech. And some said: And Eisa is the word of Allah and His Spirit. And some said: Adam was chosen by Allah. So he ﷺ came out upon them and said his Salam; and said: I have heard your words; and your amazement that Ibrahim is the Khalil of Allah; and he is such; and that Mousa is the one spoken to by Allah; and he is such; and that Eisa is the spirit of Allah and His Word; and he is such; and that Adam was chosen by Allah; and he is such. Indeed I am the beloved of Allah and I am not boasting; and I am the carrier of the Banner of Praise on the Day of Judgement; and I am not boasting. And I am the first intercessor; and the first to have intercession accepted from him on the Day of Judgement; and I am not boasting. And I am the first to shake the rings of Paradise meaning on the gates of Paradise and so Allah will open it for me and admit me into it. And with me will be the poor people from the believers; and I am not boasting. And I am the most noble among the first ones and the last ones; and I am not boasting. SunanAlTermithi-017-001-8762
  4. Narrated Ibn Abbas: The idolaters wanted to purchase the body of a man who was from the idolaters. But the Prophet ﷺ refused to trade with them [for him].[Abu Eisa said:] This Hadith isHassan Gharib; we do not know of it except from a narration of AlHakam. AlAlHajjaj Bin Artah also reported it from AlAhkam. Ahmad Bin AlHasan said: I heard Ahmad Bin Hanbal saying: Ibn Abi Laila narrations are not used as proof. Muhammad Bin Ismail said: Ibn Abi Laila is truthful; but his correct Ahadith are not recognizable from his weak ones. And I do not report anything from him. Ibn Abi Laila is truthful; and Faqih; the problem is only in the chain.Nasr Bin Ali narrated to us; [he said:] Abdullah Bin Dawud narrated us; from Sufyan AlThawri who said: Our Fuqaha are Ibn Abi Laila and Abdullah Bin Shubrumah. SunanAlTermithi-017-001-10816
  5. Narrated Ibn Abbas: The people of the Pre-Islamic Period used to think that to perform Umra during the months of Hajj was one of the major sins on earth. And also used to consider the month of Safar as a forbidden i.e. sacred month and they used to say; When the wounds of the camel back heal up after they return from Hajj and the signs of those wounds vanish and the month of Safar passes away then at that time Umra is permissible for the one who wishes to perform it. In the morning of the 4th of Dhu AlHijja; the Prophet ﷺ and his companions reached Mecca; assuming Ihram for Hajj and he ordered his companions to make their intentions of the Ihram for Umra only instead of Hajj so they considered his order as something great and were puzzled; and said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! What kind of finishing of Ihram is allowed? The Prophet ﷺ replied; Finish the Ihram completely like a non-Muhrim you are allowed everything. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5701
  6. Narrated Ibn Abbas: A man came to Allah Messenger ﷺ and said; I saw in a dream; a cloud having shade. Butter and honey were dropping from it and I saw the people gathering it in their hands; some gathering much and some a little. And behold; there was a rope extending from the earth to the sky; and I saw that you the Prophet held it and went up; and then another man held it and went up and after that another third held it and went up; and then after another fourth man held it; but it broke and then got connected again. Abu Bakr said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Let my father be sacrificed for you! Allow me to interpret this dream. The Prophet ﷺ said to him; Interpret it. Abu Bakr said; The cloud with shade symbolizes Islam; and the butter and honey dropping from it; symbolizes the Quran; its sweetness dropping and some people learning much of the Quran and some a little. The rope which is extended from the sky to the earth is the Truth which you the Prophet are following. You follow it and Allah will raise you high with it; and then another man will follow it and will rise up with it and another person will follow it and then another man will follow it but it will break and then it will be connected for him and he will rise up with it. O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Let my father be sacrificed for you! Am I right or wrong? The Prophet replied; You are right in some of it and wrong in some. Abu Bakr said; O Allah Prophet! By Allah; you must tell me in what I was wrong. The Prophet ﷺ said; Do not swear. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1677
  7. Narrated Ibn Abbas: When the Prophet ﷺ got up at night to offer the night prayer; he used to say: Allahumma laka Alhamdu; Anta nuras-samawati wal ardi wa man fihinna. wa laka Alhamdu; Anta qaiyim AlSamawati wal ardi wa man flhinna. Wa lakaI-hamdu; Anta Al;haqqun; wa wadaka haqqun; wa qauluka haqqun; wa liqauka haqqun; Aljannatu haqqun; wannaru haqqun; was-sa atu haqqun; wan-nabiyuna huqqun; Mahammadun haqqun; Allahumma laka aslamtu; wa Alaika tawakkaltu; wa bika amantu; wa ilaika anabtu; wa bika Khasamtu; wa ilaika hakamtu; faghfirli ma qaddamtu wa ma akh-khartu; wa ma asrartu; wa ma alantu. Anta Almuqaddimu; wa anta Almu-akhkhiru. La ilaha Alla anta or La ilaha ghairuka SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1807
  8. Narrated Ibn Abbas: I have not seen a thing resembling lamam minor sins than what Abu Huraira narrated from the Prophet who said Allah has written for Adam son his share of adultery which he commits inevitably. The adultery of the eyes is the sight to gaze at a forbidden thing ; the adultery of the tongue is the talk; and the inner self wishes and desires and the private parts testify all this or deny it. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1916
  9. Narrated Ibn Abbas: I had been eager to ask Umar Bin AlKhattab about the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet regarding whom Allah said If you two wives of the Prophet ﷺ namely Aisha and Hafsa turn in repentance to Allah; your hearts are indeed so inclined to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes. 66.4 till Umar performed the Hajj and I too; performed the Hajj along with him. On the way Umar went Aasi de to answer the call of nature; and I also went Aasi de along with him carrying a tumbler full of water; and when Umar had finished answering the call of nature; I poured water over his hands and he performed the ablution. Then I said to him; O chief of the Believers! Who were the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ regarding whom Allah said: If you two wives of the Prophet turn in repentance to Allah your hearts are indeed so inclined to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes ? 66.4 He said; I am astonished at your question; O Ibn Abbas. They were Aisha and Hafsa. Then Umar went on narrating the Hadith and said; I and an Ansari neighbor of mine from Bani Umaiya Bin Zaid who used to live in Awali AlMedina; used to visit the Prophet ﷺ in turn. He used to go one day and I another day. When I went; I would bring him the news of what had happened that day regarding the Divine Inspiration and other things; and when he went; he used to do the same for me. We; the people of Quraish used to have the upper hand over our wives; but when we came to the Ansar; we found that their women had the upper hand over their men; so our women also started learning the ways of the Ansari women. I shouted at my wife and she retorted against me and I disliked that she should answer me back. She said to me; Why are you so surprised at my answering you back? By Allah; the wives of the Prophet answer him back and some of them may leave does not speak to him throughout the day till the night. The talk scared me and I said to her; Whoever has done so will be ruined! Then I proceeded after dressing myself; and entered upon Hafsa and said to her; Does anyone of you keep the Prophet ﷺ angry till night? She said; Yes. I said; You are a ruined losing person! Dont you fear that Allah may get angry for the anger of Allah Messenger ﷺ and thus you will be ruined? So do not ask more from the Prophet ﷺ and do not answer him back and do not give up talking to him. Ask me whatever you need and do not be tempted to imitate your neighbor i.e.; Aisha in her manners for she is more charming than you and more beloved to the Prophet ﷺ. Umar added; At that time a talk was circulating among us that the tribe of Ghassan were preparing their horses to invade us. My Ansari companion; on the day of his turn; went to the town and returned to us at night and knocked at my door violently and asked if I was there. I became horrified and came out to him. He said; Today a great thing has happened. I asked; What is it? Have the people of Ghassan come? He said; No; but What has happened is greater and more horrifying than that: Allah Messenger ﷺ ; has divorced his wives. Umar added; The Prophet ﷺ kept away from his wives and I said Hafsa is a ruined loser. I had already thought that most probably this divorce would happen in the near future. So I dressed myself and offered the morning prayer with the Prophet ﷺ and then the Prophet; entered an upper room and stayed there in seclusion. I entered upon Hafsa and saw her weeping. I asked; What makes you weep? Did I not warn you about that? Did the Prophet ﷺ divorce you all? She said; I do not know. There he is retired alone in the upper room. I came out and sat near the pulpit and saw a group of people sitting around it and some of them were weeping. I sat with them for a while but could not endure the situation; so I went to the upper room where the Prophet; was and said to a black slave of his; Will you get the permission of the Prophet ﷺ for Umar to enter ? The slave went in; talked to the Prophet ﷺ about it and then returned saying; I have spoken to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned you but he kept quiet. Then I returned and sat with the group of people sitting near the pulpit. but I could not bear the situation and once again I said to the slave; Will you get the permission for Umar? He went in and returned saying; I mentioned you to him but he kept quiet. So I returned again and sat with the group of people sitting near the pulpit; but I could not bear the situation; and so I went to the slave and said; Will you get the permission for Umar? He went in and returned to me saying; I mentioned you to him but he kept quiet. When I was leaving; behold! The slave called me; saying; The Prophet ﷺ has given you permission. Then I entered upon Allah Messenger ﷺ and saw him Lying on a bed made of stalks of date palm leaves and there was no bedding between it and him. The stalks left marks on his side and he was leaning on a leather pillow stuffed with date-palm fires. I greeted him and while still standing I said; O Allah Apostle! Have you divorced your wives? He looked at me and said; No. I said; Allah Akbar! And then; while still standing; I said chatting; Will you heed what I say; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ? We; the people of Quraish used to have power over our women; but when we arrived at Medina we found that the men here were overpowered by their women. The Prophet ﷺ smiled and then I said to him; Will you heed what I say; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ? I entered upon Hafsa and said to her; Do not be tempted to imitate your companion Aisha ; for she is more charming than you and more beloved to the Prophet. The Prophet ﷺ smiled for a second time. When I saw him smiling; I sat down. Then I looked around his house; and by Allah; I could not see anything of importance in his house except three hides; so I said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Invoke Allah to make your followers rich; for the Persians and the Romans have been made prosperous and they have been given the pleasures of the world ; although they do not worship Allah. Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ sat up as he was reclining. and said; Are you of such an opinion; O the son of AlKhattab? These are the people who have received the rewards for their good deeds in this world. I said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Ask Allah to forgive me. Then the Prophet ﷺ kept away from his wives for twenty-nine days because of the story which Hafsa had disclosed to Aisha. The Prophet ﷺ had said; I will not enter upon them my wives for one month; because of his anger towards them; when Allah had admonished him. So; when twenty nine days had passed; the Prophet ﷺ first entered upon Aisha. Aisha said to him; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! You had sworn that you would not enter upon us for one month; but now only twenty-nine days have passed; for I have been counting them one by one. The Prophet ﷺ said; The present month is of twenty nine days. Aisha added; Then Allah revealed the Verses of the option. 2 And out of all his-wives he asked me first; and I chose him. Then he gave option to his other wives and they said what Aisha had said. 1 The Prophet; had decided to abstain from eating a certain kind of food because of a certain event; so Allah blamed him for doing so. Some of his wives were the cause of him taking that decision; therefore he deserted them for one month. See Quran: 66.4 SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3579
