When I said that; he left us without saying anything and I heard that he was hitting his thigh and saying; But man is more quarrelsome than anything. 18.54The Chapter on Timing Of Obligatory Prayers in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on The Prophet pbuh exhorting to Tahajjud and Nawafil without making them compulsory in Sahih AlBukhari

SahihAlBukhari-017-001-064Narrated Nafi: Ibn Umar said; In the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ I dreamt that a piece of silk cloth was in my hand and it flew with me to whichever part of Paradise I wanted. I also saw as if two persons i.e. angels came to me and wanted to take me to Hell. Then an angel met us and told me not to be afraid. He then told them to leave me. Hafsa narrated one of my dreams to the Prophet ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ said; Abdullah is a good man. Would that he offer the night prayer Tahajjud ! So after that day Abdullah bin Umar started offering Tahajjud. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to tell him their dreams that Laila-t AlQadr was on the 27th of the month of Ramadan. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1148Narrated Anas Bin Malik: The night Allah Messenger ﷺ was taken for a journey from the sacred Masjid of Mecca AlKaba: Three persons came to him in a dreamy while he was sleeping in the Sacred Masjid before the Divine Inspiration was revealed to Him. One of them said; Which of them is he? The middle second angel said; He is the best of them. The last third angle said; Take the best of them. Only that much happened on that night and he did not see them till they came on another night; i.e. after The Divine Inspiration was revealed to him. Fath AlBari Page 258; Vol. 17 and he saw them; his eyes were asleep but his heart was not--and so is the case with the prophets: their eyes sleep while their hearts do not sleep. So those angels did not talk to him till they carried him and placed him beside the well of Zamzam. From among them Gabriel took charge of him. Gabriel cut open the part of his body between his throat and the middle of his chest heart and took all the material out of his chest and Abdomen and then washed it with Zamzam water with his own hands till he cleansed the inside of his body; and then a gold tray containing a gold bowl full of belief and wisdom was brought and then Gabriel stuffed his chest and throat blood vessels with it and then closed it the chest. He then ascended with him to the heaven of the world and knocked on one of its doors. The dwellers of the Heaven asked; Who is it? He said; Gabriel. They said; Who is accompanying you? He said; Muhammad. They said; Has he been called? He said; Yes They said; He is welcomed. So the dwellers of the Heaven became pleased with his arrival; and they did not know what Allah would do to the Prophet ﷺ on earth unless Allah informed them. The Prophet ﷺ met Adam over the nearest Heaven. Gabriel said to the Prophet; He is your father; greet him. The Prophet ﷺ greeted him and Adam returned his greeting and said; Welcome; O my Son! O what a good son you are! Behold; he saw two flowing rivers; while he was in the nearest sky. He asked; What are these two rivers; O Gabriel? Gabriel said; These are the sources of the Nile and the Euphrates. Then Gabriel took him around that Heaven and behold; he saw another river at the bank of which there was a palace built of pearls and emerald. He put his hand into the river and found its mud like musk Adhfar. He asked; What is this; O Gabriel? Gabriel said; This is the Kauthar which your Lord has kept for you. Then Gabriel ascended with him to the second Heaven and the angels asked the same questions as those on the first Heaven; i.e.; Who is it? Gabriel replied; Gabriel. They asked; Who is accompanying you? He said; Muhammad. They asked; Has he been sent for? He said; Yes. Then they said; He is welcomed. Then he Gabriel ascended with the Prophet ﷺ to the third Heaven; and the angels said the same as the angels of the first and the second Heavens had said. Then he ascended with him to the fourth Heaven and they said the same; and then he ascended with him to the fifth Heaven and they said the same; and then he ascended with him to the sixth Heaven and they said the same; then he ascended with him to the seventh Heaven and they said the same. On each Heaven there were prophets whose names he had mentioned and of whom I remember Idris on the second Heaven; Aaron on the fourth Heavens another prophet whose name I dont remember; on the fifth Heaven; Abraham on the sixth Heaven; and Moses on the seventh Heaven because of his privilege of talking to Allah directly. Moses said to Allah ; O Lord! I thought that none would be raised up above me. But Gabriel ascended with him the Prophet for a distance above that; the distance of which only Allah knows; till he reached the Lote Tree beyond which none may pass and then the Irresistible; the Lord of Honor and Majesty approached and came closer till he Gabriel was about two bow lengths or even nearer. It is said that it was Gabriel who approached and came closer to the Prophet. Fate AlBari Page 263; 264; Vol. 17. Among the things which Allah revealed to him then; was: Fifty prayers were enjoined on his followers in a day and a night. Then the Prophet ﷺ descended till he met Moses; and then Moses stopped him and asked; O Muhammad ! What did your Lord en join upon you? The Prophet ﷺ replied; He enjoined upon me to perform fifty prayers in a day and a night. Moses said; Your followers cannot do that; Go back so that your Lord may reduce it for you and for them. So the Prophet ﷺ turned to Gabriel as if he wanted to consult him about that issue. Gabriel told him of his opinion; saying; Yes; if you wish. So Gabriel ascended with him to the Irresistible and said while he was in his place; O Lord; please lighten our burden as my followers cannot do that. So Allah deducted for him ten prayers where upon he returned to Moses who stopped him again and kept on sending him back to his Lord till the enjoined prayers were reduced to only five prayers. Then Moses stopped him when the prayers had been reduced to five and said; O Muhammad! By Allah; I tried to persuade my nation; Bani Israel to do less than this; but they could not do it and gave it up. However; your followers are weaker in body; heart; sight and hearing; so return to your Lord so that He may lighten your burden. The Prophet ﷺ turned towards Gabriel for advice and Gabriel did not disapprove of that. So he ascended with him for the fifth time. The Prophet ﷺ said; O Lord; my followers are weak in their bodies; hearts; hearing and constitution; so lighten our burden. On that the Irresistible said; O Muhammad! the Prophet replied; Labbaik and Sadaik. Allah said; The Word that comes from Me does not change; so it will be as I enjoined on you in the Mother of the Book. Allah added; Every good deed will be rewarded as ten times so it is fifty prayers in the Mother of the Book in reward but you are to perform only five in practice. The Prophet ﷺ returned to Moses who asked; What have you done? He said; He has lightened our burden: He has given us for every good deed a tenfold reward. Moses said; By Allah! I tried to make Bani Israel observe less than that; but they gave it up. So go back to your Lord that He may lighten your burden further. Allah Messenger ﷺ said; O Moses! By Allah; I feel shy of returning too many times to my Lord. On that Gabriel said; Descend in Allah Name. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1160Narrated Salim father: The Prophet ﷺ said; Not to wish to be the like of except the like of two persons : a man whom Allah has given the knowledge of the Quran and he recites it during the hours of the night and the hours of the day; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it in Allah Cause during the hours of the night and during the hours of the day.The Chapter on Hour And Ayoub in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on If I have been given what this man has been given I would do the same as he is doing in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1302Narrated AlMiswar Bin Makhrama: The group of people whom Umar had selected as candidates for the Caliphate gathered and consulted each other. Abdulrahman said to them; I am not going to compete with you in this matter; but if you wish; I would select for you a caliph from among you. So all of them agreed to let Abdulrahman decide the case. So when the candidates placed the case in the hands of Abdulrahman the people went towards him and nobody followed the rest of the group nor obeyed any after him. So the people followed Abdulrahman and consulted him all those nights till there came the night we gave the oath of allegiance to Uthman. AlMiswar bin Makhrama added: Abdulrahman called on me after a portion of the night had passed and knocked on my door till I got up; and he said to me; I see you have been sleeping! By Allah; during the last three nights I have not slept enough. Go and call AlZubair and Sad. So I called them for him and he consulted them and then called me saying; Call Ali for me. I called Ali and he held a private talk with him till very late at night; and then Al; got up to leave having had much hope to be chosen as a Caliph but Abdulrahman was afraid of something concerning Ali. Abdulrahman then said to me; Call Uthman for me. I called him and he kept on speaking to him privately till the Muadh-dhin put an end to their talk by announcing the Adhan for the Fajr prayer. When the people finished their morning prayer and that six men group gathered near the pulpit; Abdulrahman sent for all the Muhajirin emigrants and the Ansar present there and sent for the army chief who had performed the Hajj with Umar that year. When all of them had gathered; Abdulrahman said; None has the right to be worshipped but Allah; and added; Now then; O Ali; I have looked at the people tendencies and noticed that they do not consider anybody equal to Uthman; so you should not incur blame by disagreeing. Then Abdulrahman said to Uthman ; I gave the oath of allegiance to you on condition that you will follow Allah Laws and the traditions of Allah Apostle and the traditions of the two Caliphs after him. So Abdulrahman gave the oath of allegiance to him; and so did the people including the Muhajirin emigrants and the Ansar and the chiefs of the army staff and all the Muslims. The Chapter on Alansar And Dirhams in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on How do the people give the Baia to the Imam in Sahih AlBukhari

Allah Messenger ﷺ prayed in it for a few nights till the people gathered to pray the night prayer Tarawih behind him. Then on the 4th night the people did not hear his voice and they thought he had slept; so some of them started humming in order that he might come out. The Prophet ﷺ then said; You continued doing what I saw you doing till I was afraid that this Tarawih prayer might be enjoined on you; and if it were enjoined on you; you would not continue performing it. Therefore; O people! Perform your prayers at your homes; for the best prayer of a person is what is performed at his home except the compulsory congregational prayer. He said; I am not like you; for at night my Lord feeds me and makes me drink. But the people did not give up AlWisal; so the Prophet ﷺ fasted AlWisal with them for two days or two nights; and then they saw the crescent whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said; If the crescent had delayed; I would have continued fasting because of you ; as if he wanted to vanquish them completely because they had refused to give up AlWisal. The Chapter on Ramadan And Fasting Beginning Of The Month Of Ramdan in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on Going deeply into and arguing about knowledge and exaggerating in religion and inventing heresies in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1663Narrated Ibn Umar: I was a young unmarried man during the lifetime of the Prophet. I used to sleep in the Masjid. Anyone who had a dream; would narrate it to the Prophet. I said; O Allah! If there is any good for me with You; then show me a dream so that Allah Messenger ﷺ may interpret it for me. So I slept and saw in a dream two angels came to me and took me along with them; and they met another angel who said to me; Dont be afraid; you are a good man. They took me towards the Fire; and behold; it was built inside like a well; and therein I saw people some of whom I recognized; and then the angels took me to the right side. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1806Narrated Ibn Abbas: One night I slept at the house of Maimuna. The Prophet ﷺ woke up; answered the call of nature; washed his face and hands; and then slept. He got up late at night ; went to a water skin; opened the mouth thereof and performed ablution not using much water; yet he washed all the parts properly and then offered the prayer. I got up and straightened my back in order that the Prophet ﷺ might not feel that I was watching him; and then I performed the ablution; and when he got up to offer the prayer; I stood on his left. He caught hold of my ear and brought me over to his right side. He offered thirteen rakat in all and then lay down and slept till he started blowing out his breath as he used to do when he slept. In the meantime Bilal informed the Prophet ﷺ of the approaching time for the Fajr prayer; and the Prophet offered the Fajr Morning prayer without performing new ablution. He used to say in his invocation; Allahumma ijal fi qalbi nuran wa fi basari nuran; wa fi sami nuran; waan yamini nuran; waan yasari nuran; wa fawqi nuran; wa tahti nuran; wa amami nuran; wa khalfi nuran; wajal li nuran. One of them was on my right hand and the other on my left. Both of them made a request for a position of authority while the Prophet ﷺ was brushing his teeth with a tooth-stick. He said to me : Abu Mousa or Abdullah Bin Qais ; what do you say about the request they have made ? I said: By God Who sent thee on thy mission with truth; they did not disclose to me what they had in their minds; and I did not know that they would ask for a position. The narrator says while recalling this hadith : I visualise as if I were looking at the miswak of the Prophet ﷺ between his lips. He the Holy Prophet said: We shall not or shall never appoint to the public offices in our State those who with to have them; but you may go; Abu Mousa or Abdullah Bin Qais to take up your assignment. He sent him to Yemen as governor. then he sent Muadh Bin jabal in his wake to help him in the discharge of duties. When Muadh reached the camp of Abu Mousa; the latter received him and said: Please get yourself down; and he spread for him a mattress; while there was a man bound hand and foot as a prisoner. Muadh said: Who is this? Abu Mousa said: He was a Jew. He embraced Islam. Then he reverted to his false religion and became a Jew. Muadh said: I wont sit until he is killed according to the decree of Allah and His Apostle ﷺ in this case. Abu Mousa said: Be seated. It will be done. He said: I wont sit unless he is killed in accordance with the decree of Allah and His Apostle ﷺ. He repeated these words thrice. Then Abu Mousa ordered him to be killed and he was kilied. Then the two talked of standing in prayer at night. One of them; i. e. Muhammad Bin Maslama said: Messenger of Allah; do you wish that I should kill him? He said: Yes. He said: Permit me to talk to him in the way I deem fit. He said: Talk as you like. So; Muhammad Bin Maslama came to Kaab and talked to him; referred to the old friendship between them and said: This man i. e. the Holy Prophet has made up his mind to collect charity from us and this has put us to a great hardship. When be heard this; Kaab said: By God; you will be put to more trouble by him. Muhammad Bin Maslama said: No doubt; now we have become his followers and we do not like to forsake him until we see what turn his affairs will take. I want that you should give me a loan. So I carried it and there went along with him with Abu Bakr my father in order to fetch its price and he Azib said to Abu Bakr: Abu Bakr; narrate to me what you both did on the night when you set out on a journey along with Allah Messenger ﷺ. He said: We set out during the night and went on walking until it was noon; and the path was vacant and so none passed by that until there appeared prominently before us a large rock. It had its shade and the rays of the sun did not reach that place. So we got down at that place. I then went to the rock and levelled the ground with my hands at the place where the Prophet ﷺ would take rest under its shade. I then set the bedding and said: Allah Messenger; go to sleep and I shall keep a watch around you. I went out and watched around him. There we saw a shepherd moving towards that rock with his flock and he intended what we intended i. e. taking rest. I met him and said to him: Young boy; to which place do you belong? He said: I am a person from Medina. I said; is there any milk in the udders of your sheep and goats? He said: Yes. He took hold of a goat; and I said to him: Clean the udder well so that it should be free from hair; dust and impurity. I saw AlBara striking his hand upon the other to give an indication how he did that. He milked the goat for me in a wooden cup which he had with him and I had with me a bucket in which I kept water for drinking and for performing ablution. I came to Allah Apostle ﷺ and did not like to awaken him from sleep but he was accidentally startled from the sleep. I poured water upon the milk till It was cold and I said: Allah Messenger; take this milk. He then took It and I was delighted and he the Holy Prophet said: Is now not the time to march on? I said: Of course. So he marched on after the sun had passed the meridian and Suraqa Bin Malik pursued us and we had been walking on soft; level ground. I said: Allah Messenger; we are about to be overtaken by them. Thereupon he said: Be not grieved. Verily; Allah is with us. Then Allah Messenger ﷺ cursed him and his horse sank into the earth. I think he also said: I know you have hurled curse upon me. So supplicate Allah for me and I take an oath that I shall turn everyone away who would come in search of you. So he Allah Messenger supplicated Allah and he was rescued and he came back and to everyone he met; he said: I have combed all this side. SahihMuslim-017-001-20345Abdullah. Ibn Abbas reported: A person from the Ansar who was amongst the Companions of Allah Messenger ﷺ reported to me: As we were sitting during the night with Allah Messenger ﷺ ; a meteor shot gave a dazzling light. Allah Messenger ﷺ said: What did you say in the pre-Islamic days when there was such a shot of meteor ? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best the actual position ; but we; however; used to say that that very night a great man had been born and a great man had died; whereupon Allah Messenger ﷺ said: These meteors are shot neither at the death of anyone nor on the birth of anyone. Allah; the Exalted and Glorious; issues Command when He decides to do a thing. Then the Angels supporting the Throne sing His glory; then sing the dwellers of heaven who are near to them until this glory of God reaches them who are in the heaven of this world. Then those who are near the supporters of the Throne ask these supporters of the Throne: What your Lord has said? And they accordingly inform them what He says. Then the dwellers of heaven seek information from them until this information reaches the heaven of the world. In this process of transmission the jinn snatches what he manages to overhear and he carries it to his friends. And when the Angels see the jinn they attack them with meteors. If they narrate only which they manage to snatch that is correct but they alloy it with lies and make additions to it.The Chapter on Good Manners And The Companions in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on 35 in Sahih Muslim

One night while she was serving me; something of her became exposed for me; so I rushed myself upon her. When the morning came I went to my people to inform them about what happened to me. I said: Accompany me to the Messenger of Allah to inform him about my case. They said: No by Allah! We shall not do that; we feat that something will be revealed about us in the Quran; or the Messenger of Allah might say something about us; the disgrace of which will remain upon us. I said: By the One Who sent you with the Truth! We have spent these nights of ours hungry without an evening meal. He said: Go to the one with the charity from Banu Ruzaiq; tell him to give it to you; then feed a Wasq of it; on your behalf; to sixty poor people. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-24595Narrated Abdullah Bin Shaqiq: I asked Aisha about the voluntary prayers offered by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She replied: Before the noon prayer he would pray four rakahs in my house; then go out and lead the people in prayer; then return to my house and pray two rakahs. He would lead the people in the sunset prayer; then return to my house and pray two rakahs. Then he would lead the people in the night prayer; and enter my house and pray two rakahs. He would pray nine rakahs during the night; including witr prayer. At night he would pray for a long time standing and for a long time sitting. When he recited the Quran while standing; he would bow and prostrate himself from the standing position; and when he recited while sitting; he would bow and prostrate himself from the sitting position; and when dawn came he prayed two rakahs; then he would come out and lead the people in the dawn prayer. The Chapter on Bowing In Prayers And Raising From Prostration in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on s Regarding The Voluntary And Sunnah Prayers in Sunan Abu Dawoud
SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-24648Narrated Abdullah Ibn Abbas: In Surat AlMuzzammil 73 ; the verse: Keep vigil at night but a little; a half thereof 2-3 has been abrogated by the following verse: He knoweth that ye count it not; and turneth unto you in mercy. Recite then of the Quran that which is easy for you v.20. The phrase the vigil of the night nashiat Allayl means the early hours of the night. They the companions would pray the tahajjud prayer in the early hours of the night. He Ibn Abbas says: It is advisable to offer the prayer at night tahajjud ; prescribed by Allah for you in the early hours of the night. This is because when a person sleeps; he does not know when he will awake. The words speech more certain aqwamu qilan means that this time is more suitable for the understanding of the Quran. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-24686Narrated Saad Bin Hisham: I divorced my wife. I then came to Medina to sell my land that was there so that I could buy arms and fight in battle. I met a group of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. They said: Six persons of us intended to do so i.e. divorce their wives and purchase weapons ; but the Prophet ﷺ prohibited them. He said: For you in the Messenger of Allah there is an excellent model. I then came to Ibn Abbas and asked him about the witr observed by the Prophet ﷺ. He said: I point to you a person who is most familiar with the witr observed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Go to Aishah. While going to her I asked Hakim Bin Aflah to accompany me. He refused; but I adjured him. He; therefore; went along with me. We sought permission to enter upon Aishah. She said: Who is this ? He said: Hakim Bin Aflah. She asked: Who is with you ? He replied: Saad Bin Hisham. She said: Hisham son of Amir who was killed in the Battle of Uhud. I said: Yes. She said: What a good man Amir was! I said: Mother of faithful; tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She asked: Do you not recite the Quran ? The character of Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the Quran. I asked: Tell me about his vigil and prayer at night. She replied: Do you not recite: O thou folded in garments 73:1. I said: Why not ?When the opening of this Surah was revealed; the Companions stood praying most of the night until their fett swelled; and the concluding verses were not revealed for twelve months from heaven. At last the concluding verses were revealed and the prayer at night became voluntary after it was obligatory. I said: Tell me about the witr of the Prophet ﷺ. She replied: He used to pray eight rakahs; sitting only during the eighth of them. Then he would stand up and pray another rakahs. He would sit only after the eighth and the ninth rakahs. He would utter salutation only after the ninth rakah. He would then pray two rakahs sitting and that made eleven rakahs; O my son. But when he grew old and became fleshy he observed a witr of seven; sitting only in sixth and seventh rakahs; and would utter salutation only after the seventh rakah. He would then pray two rakahs sitting; and that made nine rakahs; O my son. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not pray through a whole night; or recite the whole Quran in a night or fast a complete month except in Ramadan. When he offered prayer; he would do that regularly. When he was overtaken by sleep at night; he would pray twelve rakahs. The narrator said: I came to Ibn Abbas and narrated all this to him. By Allah; this is really a tradition. MuwataMalik-017-001-34246Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd Ibn Aslam from his father that the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; was on one of his journeys; and one night Umar Ibn AlKhattab; who was travelling with him; asked him about something; but he did not answer him. He asked him again; but he did not answer him. Then he asked him again; and again he did not answer him. Umar said; May your mother be bereaved of you; Umar. Three times you have importuned the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; with a question and he has not answered you at all. Umar continued; I got my camel moving until; when I was in front of the people; I feared that a piece of Quran was being sent down about me. It was not long before I heard a crier calling for me; and I said that I feared that a piece of Quran had been sent down about me. He continued; I came to the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; and said; Peace be upon you to him; and he said; A Surat has been sent down to me this night that is more beloved to me than anything on which the sun rises. Then he recited AlFath Surat 48.The Chapter on Communication And Answers in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Prayer in Congregation in Muwata Malik

MuwataMalik-017-001-34325Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya Ibn Said from Muhammad Ibn Ibrahim that Abdulrahman Ibn Abi Amra AlAnsari said that Uthman Ibn Affan came to the isha prayer and seeing only a few people in the Masjid; he lay down at the back of the Masjid to wait for the number of people to increase. Ibn Abi Amra went and sat down beside him and Uthman asked him who he was; so he told him. Uthman said; What have you memorised of the Quran?; and he told him. Uthman said; If someone is present at isha; it is as if he had stood in prayer for half a night; and if some one is present at subh; it is as if he had stood in prayer for a whole night. The Chapter on Standing For Prayers In Alquran in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Prayer in Muwata Malik

He is pleased with it and helps you with it as long as it is not misplaced. When you ride dumb beasts; stop them in their stopping places; and quicken their pace when the land is barren. MuwataMalik-017-001-34599Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya Ibn Said said; When the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; was taken on the Night Journey; he saw an evil jinn seeking him with a torch of fire. Whenever the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; turned; he saw him. Jibril said to him; Shall I teach you some words to say? When you say them; his torch will be put out and will fall from him. The Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; said; Yes; indeed. Jibril said; Say; I seek refuge with the Noble Face of Allah and with the complete words of Allah which neither the good person nor the corrupt can exceed; from the evil of what descends from the sky and the evil of what ascends in it; and from the evil of what is created in the earth and the evil of what comes out of it; and from the trials of the night and day; and from the visitations of the night and day; except for one that knocks with good; O Merciful! MuwataMalik-017-001-34798Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdulrahman Ibn AlQasim from his father that a man from Yemen who had his hand and foot cut off came and went before Abu Bakr AlSiddiq and complained to him that the governor of the Yemen had wronged him; and the man used to pray part of the night. Abu Bakr said; By your father; your night is not the night of a thief. Then they missed a necklace of Asma bint Umays; the wife of Abu Bakr AlSiddiq. The man came to go around with them looking for it. He said; O Allah! You are responsible for the one who invaded the people of this good house by night! They found the jewelry with a goldsmith. He claimed that the maimed man had brought it to him. The maimed man confessed or it was testified against him. Abu Bakr AlSiddiq ordered that his left hand be cut off. Abu Bakr said; By Allah! His dua against himself is more serious; as far as I am concerned; than his theft. Yahya said that Malik said; What is done among us about the person who steals several times and is then called to reckoning; is that only his hand is cut off for all he stole when the hadd has not been applied againsthim. If the hadd has been applied against him before that; and he steals what obliges cutting off; then the next limb is cut off.The Chapter on Body Parts The Hands And Thumbs in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Speech in Muwata Malik
MuwataMalik-017-001-34885Malik related to me from Nafi from Abdullah Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; said; It is the duty of a muslim man who has something to be given as a bequest not to spend two nights without writing a will about it. Malik said; The generally agreed-on way of doing things in our community is that when the testator writes something in health or illness as a bequest; and it has freeing slaves or things other than that in it; he can alter it in any way he chooses; until he is on his deathbed. If he prefers to abandon a bequest or change it; he can do so unless he has made a slave mudabbar to be freed after his death. If he has made him mudabbar; there is no way to change what he has made mudabbar. He is allowed to change his testament because the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; said; It is the duty of a muslim man who has something to be given as a bequest not to spend two nights without writing a will about it. Malik explained; Had the testator not been able to change his will nor what was mentioned in it about freeing slaves; each testator might withhold making bequests from his property; whether in freeing slaves or other than it. A man gives a bequest in his health and in his travelling. i.e. he does not wait till his death bed. Malik summed up; The way of doing things in our community about which there is no dispute is that he can change whatever he likes of that except for the mudabbar. The Chapter on Selling Of Slaves in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Hair in Muwata Malik
MuwataMalik-017-001-35279Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya Ibn Said from Sulayman Ibn Yasar that Abdullah Ibn Abbas and Abu Salama Ibn Abdulrahman Ibn Awuf differed on the question of a wornan who gave birth a few nights after the death of her husband. Abu Salama said; When she gives birth to the child she is carrying; she is free to marry. Ibn Abbas said; At the end of two periods. Abu Huraira came and said; I am with my nephew; meaning Abu Salama. They sent Kurayb; a mawla of Abdullah Ibn Abbas to Umm Salamah; the wife of the Prophet; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; to ask her about it. He came back and told them that she had said that Subaya AlAslamiya had given birth a few nights after the death of her husband; and she had brought the matter to the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; and he had said; You are free to marry; so marry whomever you wish. MuwataMalik-017-001-35303108 Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; visited Umm Salamah while she was in mourning for Abu Salama and she had put aloes on her eyes. He said; What is this; Umm Salama? She said; It is only aloes; Messenger of Allah. He said; Put it on at night and wipe it off in the daytime. Malik said; The mourning of a young girl who has not yet had a menstrual period takes the same form as the mourning of one who has had a period. She avoids what a mature woman avoids if her husband dies. Malik said; A slave-girl mourns her husband when he dies for two months and five nights like her idda. MuwataMalik-017-001-35457Yahya related to me from Malik from Humayd AlTawil from Anas Ibn Malik that when the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; went out to Khaybar; he arrived there at night; and when he came upon a people by night; he did not attack until morning. In the morning; the jews came out with their spades and baskets. When they saw him; they said; Muhammad! By Allah; Muhammad and his army! MuwataMalik-017-001-35464Yahya related to me from Malik that he had asked Ibn Shihab whether someone doing itikaf could go into a house to relieve himself; and he said; Yes; there is no harm in that. Malik said; The situation that we are all agreed upon here is that there is no disapproval of anyone doing itikaf in a Masjid where jumua is held. The only reason I see for disapproving of doing itikaf in a Masjid where jumua is not held is that the man doing itikaf would have to leave the Masjid where he was doing itikaf in order to go to jumua; or else not go there at all. If; however; he is doing itikaf in a Masjid where jumua is not held; and he does not have to go to jumua in any other Masjid; then I see no harm in him doing itikaf there; because Allah; the Blessed and Exalted; says; While you are doing itikaf in Masjids; and refers to all Masjids in general; without specifying any particular kind. Malik continued; Accordingly; it is permissiblefor a man to do itikaf in a Masjid where jumua is not held if he does not have to leave it to go to a Masjid where jumua is held. Malik said; A person doing itikaf should spend the night only in the Masjid where he is doing itikaf; except if his tent is in one of the courtyards of the Masjid. I have never heard that someone doing itikaf can put up a shelter anywhere except in the Masjid itself or in one of the courtyards of the Masjid. Part of what shows that he must spend the night in the Masjid is the saying of Aisha; When the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; was doing itikaf; he would only go into the house to relieve himself. Nor should he do itikaf on the roof of the Masjid or in the minaret. Malik said; The person who is going to do itikaf should enter the place where he wishes to do itikaf before the sun sets on the night when he wishes to begin his itikaf; so that he is ready to begin the itikaf at the beginning of the night when he is going to start his itikaf. A person doing itikaf should be occupied with his itikaf; and not turn his attention to other things which might occupy him; such as trading or whatever. There is no harm; however; if some one doing itikaf tells some one to do something for him regarding his estate; or the affairs of his family; or tells someone to sell some property of his; or something else that does not occupy him directly. There is no harm in him arranging for someone else to do that for him if it is a simple matter. Malik said; I have never heard any of the people of knowledge mentioning any modification as far as how to do itikaf is concerned. Itikaf is an act of ibada like the prayer; fasting; the hajj; and such like acts; whether they are obligatory or voluntary. Anyone who begins doing any of these acts should do them according to what has come down in the sunna. He should not start doing anything in them that the muslims have not done; whether it is a modification that he imposes on others; or one that he begins doing himself. The Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; practised itikaf; and the muslims know what the sunna of itikaf is. Malik said; Itikaf and jiwar are the same; and Itikaf is the same for a village-dweller as it is for a nomad. The Chapter on Ramadan And Fasting And Kabah in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Divorce in Muwata Malik
MuwataMalik-017-001-35472Yahya related to me from Malik from Yazid Ibn Abdullah Ibn AlHadi from Muhammad Ibn Ibrahim AlHarith AlTaymi from Abu Salama Ibn Abdulrahman that Abu Said AlKhudri said; The Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; used to do itikaf in the middle ten days of Ramadan. One year he was doing itikaf and then; when it came to the night of the twenty-first; which was the night before the morning when he would normally have finished his itikaf; he said; Whoever has done itikaf with me should continue doing itikaf for the last ten days. I saw a certain night and then I was made to forget it. I saw myself prostrating the following morning in water and clay. Look for it in the last ten days; and look for it on the odd days. Abu Said continued; The sky poured with rain that night and the Masjid had a roof made of palm fronds and the Masjid was soaked. With my own eyes I saw the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; leave with traces of water and clay on his forehead and nose; in the morning after the night of the twenty- first. The Chapter on Ramadan And Fasting Prostrating On Mud in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Divorce in Muwata Malik

MuwataMalik-017-001-35624Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Abu Umama Ibn Sahl Ibn Hunayf told him that once a poor woman fell ill and the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; was told of her illness; and the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; used to visit poor people frequently and ask after them. The Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; said; Let me know if she dies. Her bier was brought out at night- time and they did not want to wake up the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace. In the morning the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; was told what had happened to her and he said; Didnt I tell you to let me know if she died?
