If ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands. If ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity, bathe your whole body. But if ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands, Allah doth not wish to place you in a difficulty, but to make you clean, and to complete his favour to you, that ye may be grateful.

Ubaidullah Bin Eyad told me that the daughter of AlHarith told him that when they gathered to kill Khubaib AlAnsari he asked for a razor to clean his pubic region; and when they had taken him outside the sanctuary of Mecca in order to kill him; he said in verse; I dont care if I am killed as a Muslim; on any side of my body I may be killed in Allah Cause; for that is for the sake of Allah very Self; and if He will; He will bestow His Blessings upon the torn pieces of my body. I was a poor man; and used to stick to Allah Messenger ﷺ contented with what will fill my stomach; and the Muhajirin emigrants used to be busy trading in the markets; and the Ansar used to be busy looking after their properties. One-day I heard Allah Messenger ﷺ saying; Who will spread his Rida a garment covering the upper part of the body till I finished my speech and then fold it; i.e. wrap it over your body ; in which case he will never forget anything he had heard from me. She replied; There was something a quarrel between me and him whereupon he got angry with me and went out without having a midday nap in my house. Allah Messenger ﷺ asked a person to look for him. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3252Narrated Safwan Bin Yala Bin Umaiya: Yala used to say; I wish I could see Allah Messenger ﷺ at the time he is being inspired Divinely. When the Prophet ﷺ was at AlJarana and was shaded by a garment hanging over him and some of his companions were with him; a man perfumed with scent came and said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! What is your opinion regarding a man who assumes Ihram and puts on a cloak after perfuming his body with scent? The Prophet ﷺ waited for a while; and then the Divine Inspiration descended upon him. Umar pointed out to Yala; telling him to come. Yala came and pushed his head underneath the screen which was covering the Prophet ﷺ and behold! The Prophet face was red and he kept on breathing heavily for a while and then he was relieved. Thereupon he said; Where is the questioner who asked me about Umra a while ago? He went again and returned; saying; No; by Allah; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ; not even an iron ring; but I have this waist sheet of mine. The man had no upper garment; so he intended to give her; half his waist sheet. So Allah Messenger ﷺ said; What would she do with your waist sheet? If you wear it; she will have nothing of it over her body; and if she wears it; you will have nothing over your body. So that man sat for a long period and then got up; and Allah Messenger ﷺ saw him going away; so he ordered somebody to call him. When he came; the Prophet ﷺ asked him; How much of the Quran do you know? He replied; I know such Surat and such Surat and such Surat; and went on counting it; The Prophet ﷺ asked him; Can you recite it by heart? he replied; Yes. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3837Narrated Abdullah: While the Prophet ﷺ was in the state of prostration; surrounded by a group of people from Quraish pagans. Uqba Bin Abi Muait came and brought the intestines of a camel and threw them on the back of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ did not raise his head from prostration till Fatima i.e. his daughter came and removed those intestines from his back; and invoked evil on whoever had done the evil deed. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4040Narrated Abdulrahman Bin Auf: While I was standing in the row on the day of the battle of Badr; I looked to my right and my left and saw two young Ansari boys; and I wished I had been stronger than they. One of them called my attention saying; O Uncle! Do you know Abu Jahl? I said; Yes; What do you want from him; O my nephew? He said; I have been informed that he abuses Allah Messenger ﷺ. By Him in Whose Hands my life is; if I should see him; then my body will not leave his body till either of us meet his fate. I was astonished at that talk. Then the other boy called my attention saying the same as the other had said. After a while I saw Abu Jahl walking amongst the people. I said to the boys ; Look! This is the man you asked me about. So; both of them attacked him with their swords and struck him to death and returned to Allah Apostle to inform him of that. Allah Messenger ﷺ asked; Which of you has killed him? Each of them said; I Have killed him. Allah Messenger ﷺ asked; Have you cleaned your swords? They said; No. He then looked at their swords and said; No doubt; you both have killed him and the spoils of the deceased will be given to Muadh Bin Amr Bin AlJamuh. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4199Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah Messenger ﷺ said; The Prophet Moses was a shy person and used to cover his body completely because of his extensive shyness. One of the children of Israel hurt him by saying; He covers his body in this way only because of some defect in his skin; either leprosy or scrotal hernia; or he has some other defect. Allah wished to clear Moses of what they said about him; so one day while Moses was in seclusion; he took off his clothes and put them on a stone and started taking a bath. When he had finished the bath; he moved towards his clothes so as to take them; but the stone took his clothes and fled; Moses picked up his stick and ran after the stone saying; O stone! Give me my garment! Till he reached a group of Bani Israel who saw him naked then; and found him the best of what Allah had created; and Allah cleared him of what they had accused him of. The stone stopped there and Moses took and put his garment on and started hitting the stone with his stick. By Allah; the stone still has some traces of the hitting; three; four or five marks. This was what Allah refers to in His Saying:- O you who believe! SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4479Narrated Anas: My uncle Anas Bin AlNadr was absent from the Battle of Badr. He said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! I was absent from the first battle you fought against the pagans. By Allah if Allah gives me a chance to fight the pagans; no doubt. Allah will see how bravely I will fight. On the day of Uhud when the Muslims turned their backs and fled; he said; O Allah! I apologize to You for what these i.e. his companions have done; and I denounce what these i.e. the pagans have done. Then he advanced and Saad Bin Muadh met him. He said O Saad Bin Muadh ! By the Lord of AlNadr; Paradise! I am smelling its aroma coming from before the mountain of Uhud; Later on Saad said; O Allah Apostle! I cannot achieve or do what he i.e. Anas Bin AlNadr did. We found more than eighty wounds by swords and arrows on his body. We found him dead and his body was mutilated so badly that none except his sister could recognize him by his fingers. We used to think that the following Verse was revealed concerning him and other men of his sort: Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah.......... 33.23 His sister AlRubbaya broke a front tooth of a woman and Allah Messenger ﷺ ordered for retaliation. On that Anas bin AlNadr said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! By Him Who has sent you with the Truth; my sister tooth shall not be broken. Then the opponents of Anas sister accepted the compensation and gave up the claim of retaliation. We were on the look out for a caravan of the Quraish. So we stayed on the coast for half a month; and were so much afflicted by extreme hunger that we were obliged to eat leaves. That is why it was called the Detachment of the Leaves. The ocean cast out for us an animal which was called AlAnbar whale. We ate of that for half of the month and rubbed its fat on our bodies until our bodies became stout. Abu Ubaida caught hold of one of its ribs and fixed that up. He then cast a glance at the tallest man of the army and the highest of the camels. and then made him ride over that; and that-tnan passed beneath it the rib ; and many a man could sit in its eye-socket; and we extracted many pitchers of fat from the cavity of its eye. We had small bags containing dates with us before finding the whale. Ubaida gave every person amongst us a handful of dates and when the provision ran short ; he then gave each one of us one date. SahihMuslim-017-001-17766It has been narrated on the authority of Hudhaifa Bin AlYaman who said: People used to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the good times; but I used to ask him about bad times fearing lest they overtake me. I said: Messenger of Allah; we were in the midst of ignorance and evil; and then God brought us this good time through Islam. Is there any bad time after this good one? He said: Yes. I asked: Will there be a good time again after that bad time? He said: Yes; but therein will be a hidden evil. I asked: What will be the evil hidden therein? He said: That time will witness the rise of the people who will adopt ways other than mine and seek guidance other than mine. You will know good points as well as bad points. I asked: Will there be a bad time after this good one? He said: Yes. A time will come when there will be people standing and inviting at the gates of Hell. Whoso responds to their call they will throw them into the fire. I said: Messenger of Allah; describe them for us. He said: All right. They will be a people having the same complexion as ours and speaking our language. I said: Messenger of Allah; what do you suggest if I happen to live in that time? He said: You should stick to the main body of the Muslims and their leader. I said: If they have no such thing as the main body and have no leader? SahihMuslim-017-001-17866It has been narrated on the authority of Masruq Who said: We asked Abdullah about the Quranic verse: Think not of those who are slain in Allah way as dead. Nay; they are alive; finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord.. iii. 169. He said: We asked the meaning of the verse from the Holy Prophet who said: The souls; of the martyrs live in the bodies of green birds who have their nests in chandeliers hung from the throne of the Almighty. They eat the fruits of Paradise from wherever they like and then nestle in these chandeliers. Once their Lord cast a glance at them and said: Do ye want anything? They said: What more shall we desire? We eat the fruit of Paradise from wherever we like. Their Lord asked them the same question thrice. When they saw that they will continue to be asked and not left without answering the question. they said: O Lord; we wish that Thou mayest return our souls to our bodies so that we may be slain in Thy way once again. SahihMuslim-017-001-17898It has been Deported on the authority of Anas who said: My uncle and I have been named after him was not present with the Messenger of Allah mav ﷺ on the Day of Badr. He felt distressed about it. He would say: I have missed the first battle fought by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ; and if God now gives me an opportunity to see a battlefield with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ; God will see what I do therein. He was afraid to say more than this lest he be unable to keep his word with God. He was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Uhud. He met Saad Bin Muadh who was retreating. Anas said to him: O Abu Amr; where are you going ? Woe to thee ! I find the smell of Paradise beside the Uhud mountain. Reprimanding Saad in these words he went forward and fought thein the enemy until he was killed. The narrator says. More than eighty wounds inflicted with swords; spears and arrows were found on his body. His sister; my aunt; AlRubayi; daughter of Nadr; said: I could not recognise my brother body it was so badly mutilated except from his finger-tips. It was on this occasion that the Quranic verse: Among the Believers are men who have been true to their covenant with God. Of them some have completed their vow to the extreme ; and some still wait: but they have never changed their determination in the least xxxiii. 23. Hammad one of the narrators in the chain of transmitters mentioned the swetness of its odour; and further said that the dwellers of the sky say: Here comes the pious soul from the side of the earth Let there be blessings of Allah upon the body in which it resides. And it is carried by the angels to its Lord; the Exalted and Glorious. He would say: Take it to its destined end. And if he is a nonbeliever and as it the soul leaves the body-Hammad made a mention of its foul smell and of its being cursed-the dwellers of the sky say: There comes a dirty soul from the side of the earth; and it would be said: Take it to its destined end. They are dead and their bodies have decayed. Thereupon he the Holy Prophet said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life; what I am saying to them; even you cannot hear more distinctly than they; but they lack the power to reply. SahihMuslim-017-001-20903Abu Nawfal reported: I saw the dead body of Abdullah Bin AlZubair hanging on the road of Medina leading to Mecca. The Quraish passed by it and other people too; that Abdullah Bin Umar happened to pass by it. He stood up there and said: May there be peace upon you; Abu Khubaib the Kunya of Hadrat Abdullah Bin AlZubair ; may there be peace upon you Abu Khubaib; may there be peace upon you; Abu Khubaib! By Allah; I used to forbid you from this; by Allah; I used to forbid you from this; by Allah I used to forbid you from this. By Allah; so far as I know; you had been very much devoted to fasting and prayer and you had been paying very much care to cementing the ties of blood. By Allah; the group to which you belong are labelled as a wicked person is indeed a fine group. Then Abdullah Bin Umar went away. The stand Abdullah Bin Umar took in regard to the inhuman treatment meted out to Abdullah Bin AlZubair and his words in that connection were conveyed to AlHajjaj Bin Yousif and as a consequence of that he the body of Abdullah Bin AlZubair was brought down from the stump the scaffold by which it was hanging and thrown into the graves of the Jews. He AlHajjaj sent his messenger to Asma bint Abu Bakr; Abdullah mother. But she refused to come. He again sent the messenger to her with the message that she must come; otherwise he would bring her forcibly catching hold of her hair. But she again refused and said: By Allah; I will not come to you until you send one to me who would drag me by pulling my hair. Thereupon he said: Bring me my shoes. He put on his shoes and walked on quickly swollen with vanity and pride until he came to her and said: How do you find what I have done with the enemy of Allah? He was praying a very short prayer as if it were the prayer of a traveller or near it. When he gave a greeting; my father said: May Allah have mercy on you! I did not make a mistake except in one thing that I forgot. Their survivors are to be found in cells and monasteries. Then he quoted: Monasticism; they invented it; we did not prescribe it for them. Next day he went out in the morning and said: will you not go out for a ride; so that you may see something and take a lesson from it? He said: Yes. Then all of them rode away and reached a land whose inhabitants had perished; passed away and died. The roofs of the town had fallen in. He asked: Do you know this land? I said: Who acquainted me with it and its inhabitants? Anas said: This is the land of the people whom oppression and envy destroyed. Envy extinguishes the light of good deeds; and oppression confirms or falsifies it. MuwataMalik-017-001-34846Malik related to me that the generally agreed on way of doing things amongst the community about an accident is that there is no blood-money until the victim is better. If a man bone; either a hand; or a foot; or another part of his body; is broken accidentally and it heals and becomes sound and returns to its form; there is no blood-money for it. If the limb is impaired or there is a scar on it; there is blood-money for it according to the extent that it is impaired. Malik said; If that part of the body has a specific blood-money mentioned by the Prophet; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; it is according to what the Prophet; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; specified. If it is part of what does not have a specific blood-money for it mentioned by the Prophet; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; and if there is no previous sunna about it or specific blood-money; one uses ijtihad about it. Malik said; There is no blood-money for an accidental bodily injury when the wound heals and returns to its form. If there is any scar or mark in that; ijtihad is used about it except for the belly-wound. There is a third of the blood-money of a life for it. Malik said; There is no blood-money for the wound which splinters a bone in the body; and it is like the wound to the body which lays bare the bone. Malik said; The generally agreed on way of doing things in our community is that when the doctor performs a circumcision and cuts off the glans; he must pay the full blood-money.
